In November, 2010 ITT announced ENVI 4.8 and ENVI for ArcGIS Server – officially announced at this year’s GeoInt event in New Orleans, LA (See announcement).
In the works for several years, this important release introduces new capabilities to make image analysis more accessible, including "full" integration with ArcGIS – this product completes the vision that ITT and Esri set out with when their partnership began – recall back in 2008 when ITT and Esri first announced ENVI integration with ArcGIS (See details)
At GeoInt event we met up with ITT Director of Product Marketing, Beau Legeer who was gracious enough to spend several minutes and discuss some highlights of ENVI 4.8

- ENVI 4.8 makes it seamless to update a GIS with current information from geospatial imagery by delivering image analysis tools directly from the ArcGIS environment.
- new LiDAR viewer allows you to easily incorporate information from LiDAR data with your other geospatial data

- capabilities are fully integrated with ArcGIS – advanced image processing and analysis tools directly from the ArcGIS desktop and ArcGIS® Server environments
- ENVI tools for ArcGIS are available in a familiar ArcGIS toolbox, exposing ENVI functionality through geoprocessing scripts that operate in both desktop and server environments
- Rich image processing functionality like: change detection, feature extraction, classification
- new 3-dimensional viewer that efficiently works with very large LiDAR data sets
- processing and analyzing imagery in step-by-step, wizard-like processes
- viewshed analysis workflow provided in ENVI 4.8
- Released concurrently with ENVI 4.8, ENVI for ArcGIS® Server
