Five Ways to Speed Up Your Internet Connection

November 8, 2021 By GISuser

In this digitalized world, a slow internet connection is the worst thing that can happen to you. I mean, imagine yourself coming back from work exhausted, getting in bed with a steaming cup of coffee, and switching on your laptop to binge on your favorite TV show.

But, all excitement and warm feeling would suddenly die when you face continuous buffering on your streaming channel. This is when you’d conduct a speed test to check your internet speeds and would notice that you’re facing a slow internet problem.

Of course, with thousands of users surfing the internet simultaneously, internet speeds may be a problem you might face on occasion. So, to prevent this scenario at all times, you need to know a few tips to speed up your internet.

These tips can range from moving slightly closer to your router, updating your bandwidth, and clearing out your cache.

5 Quick Tips to Speed Up Your Internet

Slow speed can be a major cause of multiple minor or significant issues. These include low disk space, the type of internet you use, your device is infected with malware, or ISP throttling. While the other issues may require significant changes, you can just bypass ISP throttling with a VPN (Learn more about it in detail below).

However, here are a few tips through which you can use to regain your internet speed for a smooth streaming, torrenting, and surfing experience:

1. Check your bandwidth cap:

The first thing you need to do is take a look at your data cap. It’s quite normal to have an internet connection with a bandwidth limit. However, there is a possibility that you’re near the end of your data limit for this month.

While your internet service provider (ISP) should immediately notify you if that’s the case and charge you for going beyond your limit, some ISPs just slow down your internet speeds without giving any possible explanations.

To confirm all this information, you might have to call your internet service provider (ISP) and ask him how much data has already been consumed. If you don’t know about your bandwidth limits, you can simply check your internet bill for the previous month and upgrade to another plan if the bandwidth is less for you.

2. Disconnect all the extra devices connected to your internet:

This is one immediate layman’s way to see a boost in your internet connection. In many cases, you have a wide variety of devices connected to the internet that consume your data limit but the devices remain unused.

Suppose all your devices at home, for example, your Smart TV, gaming consoles, phones, tablets, laptops, computers, etc., are connected to your internet. In that case, these devices can easily consume a lot of data and reduce internet speeds for you.

So, one effective way to prevent this from happening is to disconnect all the devices from your internet and connect them only when you’re going to use them.

3. Bypass ISP throttling using the right tools:

Sometimes, you might notice a slow internet connection when you’re doing something specific, like downloading torrent files or streaming Netflix. This might be because your ISP must be slowing down your speed on purpose while you try to perform these activities.

ISPs are famous for doing that whenever there’s a traffic overload or when you’re using the internet for any activity that consumes more bandwidth than usual, like streaming, gaming, or torrenting. ISPs know exactly what you’re doing on the internet.

However, if you want to go completely anonymous so your ISP can’t slow down your speeds, you need a VPN service. Thus, you can bypass ISP throttling with a VPN and enjoy doing anything you like over the internet with fast speeds.

4. Avoid Wi-Fi connections:

Another way to significantly improve your internet speeds is by avoiding using a Wi-Fi connection and connecting yourself to a wired cable. While wired internet connections are a hassle in the 21st century, they still offer a better speed than Wi-Fi.

Wired ethernet connections prevent device interventions and offer a faster connection to the device it is connected to, helping you enjoy all your internet activities.

5. Clear the cache of your browser:

Browser cache is usually around to give you an efficient internet experience. However, this might be the opposite if there are unnecessary files filled in your browser.

So, in case you want to clear your browser cache, you need to follow the steps below:

  1. Press the three dots at the top-right corner of your screen. From the drop-down below, hover over More Tools > Clear Browsing Data.
  2. In the clear browsing data options, tick the box that says ‘cached images and file’ and change the time range to ‘all-time.’
  3. Click the Clear data button, and you’re good to go.

Conclusion

The tips mentioned above are quite effective and will help you in speeding up your internet connection.

However, please note that there is no 100% guarantee that you’ll see a boost in your speeds by following these tips. Therefore, after following each, we highly recommend that you run a speed test to check if you have faced any changes or not.
