Amazing Story Maps – Mapping the Anacostia River

April 24, 2018 By GISuser

The following are a series of Story Maps that tell the story of the Anacostia River that Esri has collaborated on with the author/photographer, Krista Schlyer. Esri shares with us that Allen Carroll, leader of Esri’s Story Maps Team, describes these as “some of the very best and most beautiful story maps I’ve seen anywhere.”

Urged along by gravity, the springwater, snowmelt, and rainwater of a suburban DC landscape gather to form the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River. These waters travel 21 miles through gentle forest, field, and pasture, and over grimy roadways, parking lots, and rooftops in Colesville, Wheaton, and Silver Spring, toward their union with the Northeast Branch.

River of Resilience is an adaptation of Krista Schlyer’s forthcoming book, River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia, due out Fall 2018 from Texas A&M University Press. The story map is a collaboration between Schlyer, the International League of Conservation Photographers, and the Esri Story Maps team, with generous support from the District Department of Energy and Environment, and in partnership with the Anacostia Waterfront Trust.
