We use our phones for everything these days, of course some of us still use them for phone calls, most of us use them for instant messaging, we consume TV shows and movies more than we ever have in a handy package, we share pictures of our travels, we use them for work meetings, if you’re like me you no longer have to visit online bookmakers with an abundance of mobile betting apps to suit my every need, but the main thing I use my phone for these days and it’s strange to imagine, is gaming.
Mobile gaming has come a LONG way and I mean that in the most literal sense. Long gone are the days of basic puzzle games and things like Angry Birds making everyone go wild, turning 5 minute toilet breaks into 25 minute toilet breaks. While we all had fun back in the day with titles like that, fruit ninja and temple run. These days there are ACTUAL MMORPGs and MOBAs on mobile so you can properly get your gaming fix, some of the BIGGEST franchises in the world have mobile variants, Fortnite, Call of Duty even Diablo is getting a mobile game, why? Well, in China alone there are an estimated 660 million mobile gamers, so it’s no wonder the tech and the games we play have grown massively. So why are we here today? I’m going to take a brief look at some of the best phones on the market for mobile gaming and what makes them a good choice, I’m going to be looking at this from a purely performance based point of view as we’re all aware frames win games. If you’re looking for a budget phone, you won’t find it here I’m afraid! Let’s get into it with a list first, in no particular order.

- ASUS ROG Phone 3 (ROG)
- Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max (i12)
I hear you asking, why are these the ‘best’ phones on the market for gaming? Before I begin I’ll say I ONLY included the iPhone 12 Pro Max as an option that wasn’t Android. Anyway, these would be the best for many reasons. All of these phones have vibrant displays which will help make your games LOOK better, while the i12 screen only has a 60hz refresh rate (still ample for gaming) the SGS has a 120hz refresh rate and the ROG boasts a 144hz display. As I said FRAMES WIN GAMES. If you’re playing something like Fortnite or Call of Duty mobile, the fact you can rock those high refresh rates is going to give you an ACTUAL benefit.
Next, all 3 of these phones are spec giants. AAll featuring high core count, high clock speed CPU’s, the ROG in particular features 8 cores, 1 of which is clocked at 3.1ghz, specifically for gaming. The SGS and the ROG both come in variants that offer up to 12GBs of RAM while the i12 is let down in this aspect by only offering 6gb across all models.
If you’re using headphones the next part won’t necessarily matter, but of the 3 the ROG has the best speakers, can you tell this is a phone designed for gamers?
Finally, all 3 of these devices are 5G compatible, meaning, if you’re lucky enough to live in a 5G enabled area, you can get the very best speeds on the go so you don’t lose any of the experience while travelling! What’s not to love?
In a nutshell, if you want a good experience gaming on mobile, by which I mean smooth and good looking, any near flagship device will do, something with a good looking display, high refresh rate, plenty of ram and AT LEAST one high speed CPU core. Some devices obviously work better than others, however, just remember the further down the spec table you go the worse your experience will be and that isn’t to say budget phones can’t run games, they absolutely can, but if you live in a region where mobile gaming is massive AND competitive, like China, you’re going to want the best bit of kit you can get your hands on to give yourself every advantage on the battlefield.
To me, the best bit of kit? The ROG Phone 3 from ASUS. I think it’s a no brainer, however any of the phones above will set you back a pretty penny, so make sure you shop smart. As I always like to say, it’s not necessarily about HOW MUCH money you have, it’s about making what you have go as far as possible. Shop around, you don’t need to show loyalty to outlets because they don’t care about you, they just want your cash! So be clever, look for deals.
