Aibot X6 uses Leica Nova MultiStation for accurate geospatial data without GNSS

October 1, 2014 By GISuser

(Norcross, GA /Kassel, Germany, 1 October, 2014) – At this year’s INTERGEO in Berlin, Leica Geosystems and its sister company, Aibotix, will present a solution for accurate positioning of the Aibot X6 without GNSS. The UAV can be tracked accurately with the Leica Nova MultiStation to define the exact position.

Using the Aibot X6 together with the Nova MultiStation can inspect top surfaces of aircrafts in hangars, enabling users to rely on its proven functionality without the support of GNSS.

The UAV, equipped with Leica Geosystems’ 360° prism, flies over the aircraft and takes high-resolution images of its surface. This solution helps, for example, to ascertainlightning strikes and effectively document them. During its flight, the Aibot X6 is tracked by the Leica Nova MultiStation to determine its exact spatial position with anaccuracy of a few centimeters. In this way, the tracking allows each image to be georeferenced without GNSS. Subsequently, this solution will also allow tracking for pre-programmed flight lines.

“The tracking of Aibot X6 with the Leica Nova MultiStation is the first result of our close cooperation with Leica Geosystems,” says Jörg Lamprecht from Aibotix. Both companies belong to Hexagon and develop integrated solutions for the use of UAVs. Rüdiger Wagner, Vice President & General Manager – Solutions at Leica Geosystems, comments: “There are many more synergies, which we will use in the development of further applications for UAVs.”
This solution will be on display at INTERGEO 2014! Learn more about Leica Geosystems’ innovative solutions from October 7- 9 in Berlin, Hall 1.1 Booth A1.024.
