How Technology Has Changed Horse Racing Betting Forever

July 12, 2025 By GISuser

Horse racing is one of the oldest and most prestigious sports in the world, which has attracted fans for centuries. From England’s royal paddocks to Kentucky’s dusty tracks, horse racing is traditional, glamorous, and beautifully unpredictable. But while watching these beautiful beasts… and betting on them seems to have been going on forever, one thing that has changed beyond all recognition is how we bet on horse racing.

Technology has completely revolutionised the whole way we, as punters, engage with the sport, changing everything from how we study a horse’s form to how we actually get around to placing our bet on today’s racecard. And it hasn’t just made horse racing betting more accessible, it’s changed the whole industry.

Here, we’re going to look at how technology has completely changed the world of horse racing betting and what this means for the future.

The Digital Revolution

It wasn’t that long ago that betting on the horses meant an actual physical visit – either to the local bookies or a day at the track. You’d get your morning newspaper or a printed racing program to see what races were on, study the form, weigh up the odds… scribble a few notes in the margin and then join the queue to place your bet.

And there are no doubt many old-schoolers who still do it because that’s what they know and love, but for many, the digital revolution has all but replaced it. These days, you can look through the odds, check out the race results, and place your bets online in a matter of moments. You don’t need to be at the course. In fact, you don’t even need to be at home to bet. With mobile technology, you can bet anywhere, anytime.

Online betting sites and mobile apps have made it even more accessible to everyone – and helped it keep its place in a hugely competitive betting market.

Live Streaming

One of the biggest game-changers has definitely been live streaming. It wasn’t that long ago that if you weren’t at the track or glued to the TV, you’d have to wait for the next day’s papers to find out the racing results. Now there are streaming services that let you watch practically all races in real time on your phone, tablet, laptop or computer… whatever’s easiest.

Pretty much all online bookmakers offer live streaming to anyone who bets on the race, so you can look at the horses in the parade ring, watch the start, and feel all the thrill of the finish without having to take one step outside. And for lots of punters, watching the race is actually a big part of the excitement – getting them more involved than just studying the odds and form.

It’s also made it more accessible all over the world. Fans in Australia can watch Ascot races – and punters in the UK can watch the Melbourne Cup… all in the click of a few buttons.

Better Data and Insights

If you’ve ever actually tried decoding a racecard, you’ll know that horse racing stats can be quite difficult to get your head around if you don’t know what you’re doing. But thanks to technology, lots of raw data has now been streamlined and made a lot more accessible for everyday punters.

Most modern bookies and racing websites now offer even more sophisticated form guides along with things like historic stats, speed figures, ground condition records – and they even throw in weather forecasts for good measure. And there are some that take it even further and actually use AI to generate tips or probability models. All of this accessible information has levelled the playing field a lot – and you no longer need to be an industry expert or a lifelong punter to get a decent idea of how a horse might do.

Better still, bettors can even now customise how they consume all of this information. Some might look for tipsters and pre-made betting slips, while others prefer a dive deep into all the data so they can build up strategies.

In-Play Betting and New Markets

It’s not just about making pre-race bets anymore, either – and with technology we’ve been introduced to in-play betting. Although it’s not as widespread as in sports like football or tennis, there are some options for longer races, so you can react to how a race is unfolding.

And thanks to tech, betting markets go way beyond just picking a winner. You can try your luck with accumulators, forecasts, placepots, and match bets with just a few taps. Lots of sites even let you customise your own bets and cash out early if you want to lock in your profit or cut your losses.

Mobile Betting

Although online betting has brought the bookies into your home, mobile technology puts it all in your pocket. Thanks to the smartphone boom, there’s been a massive rise in online horse racing betting. A few years ago, only a tiny percentage of horse racing bets were made on mobile, but now they make up the majority.

These days, you can check out racecards and place bets anywhere you want, compare odds in real time, and place your bets in seconds. And lots of apps come with push notifications for race updates, price boosts, and special offers, making it better than ever.

Virtual Horse Racing

What’s more, if there’s no actual race that catches your eye, then technology brings us another special treat… virtual horse racing. With the use of random number generators, horse races are simulated every few minutes with computer-generated horses and realistic commentary. And although horse racing purists might not be impressed, it’s getting hugely popular. It offers non-stop action and super quick results no matter what the weather or track schedules.

What’s Next?

It’s highly probable that the future of horse racing betting will be shaped by even more technology. Expect to see things like AI-powered betting bots, advanced predictive analytics, and bookies using it to give you an even more personalised betting experience. It could also be that blockchain and cryptocurrencies could start to play a bigger role, offering faster and more secure transactions.

The fundamentals of horse racing might not have changed at all… the thrills of picking the winner and the beauty of the horses. But the way we bet on it has changed forever and continues to change – and there’s no going back.
