How to Unpack After Moving House

February 10, 2025 By GISuser

Relocating to a new home is an exciting new beginning, but seeing a sea of boxes might be a little stressful on occasion. Becoming confused is the last thing you want after packing, moving, and unloading. When done well, unpacking sets the tone for how quickly your new place feels like home, making it equally as significant as the actual relocation.

At Butler’s Removals & Storage, we’ve helped countless families transition smoothly, and we know that a smart unpacking strategy makes all the difference. Instead of rushing through it or leaving boxes untouched for weeks, a step-by-step approach can help you settle in faster. Here’s our guide to turning a house full of boxes into a comfortable, organised home.

Take a Moment to Plan Your Attack

Before you dive in and start opening boxes at random (tempting as that might be!), take a breather and spend a few minutes getting your bearings. A quick walk through your new home can work wonders – peek into each room, visualise where your furniture will sit best, and mentally note which spaces need immediate attention.

Trust us, those fifteen minutes of planning can save you hours of shuffling things around later. Consider how you will utilise each area on a daily basis and use that information to prioritise your unpacking list. It is remarkable how a little planning can transform an intimidating undertaking into a feasible undertaking.

Create Your Survival Station

Remember that special box you packed with all your must-haves? Now is its moment to shine. Find a clear corner or surface and set up what we like to call your ‘survival station.’ This will be your go-to spot for those crucial first-day items – your toiletries, basic kitchen bits, phone chargers, and fresh clothes.

Having this dedicated space stops you from playing that frustrating game of “Which box was it in?” when you desperately need your coffee maker at 7 am tomorrow. Plus, it gives you a functional base camp while you tackle the rest of the unpacking. We have seen plenty of people skip this step in their eagerness to unpack everything at once, only to find themselves rummaging through boxes at midnight, looking for their toothbrushes!

The Kitchen: Your First Major Project

Let’s face it – the kitchen is the heart of your home, and getting it sorted makes everything else feel more manageable. Start with your essential appliances (because nobody wants to order takeaway for a week straight!), then move on to everyday items like plates, cups, and cutlery.

We always suggest tackling one cabinet at a time rather than having everything out at once. It might seem slower, but it actually helps you stay organised and prevents that overwhelming feeling of having every surface covered in kitchen gear. Give each shelf a quick wipe-down as you go – it is much easier now than when everything is in place. As for those specialty items like the bread maker or that fancy juicer? They can wait their turn. Focus on getting your kitchen functional first, then find homes for the less-used items later.

Bedrooms: Creating Your Sanctuary

Nothing beats having a freshly made bed to collapse into after a hard day of unpacking. That is why we always recommend tackling bedrooms next. Start with getting your bed set up – in the future, you will be eternally grateful! Then, move on to essential clothing items and bedside necessities. While some folks opt for an unpacking service to speed things along, setting up your own bedroom allows you to arrange everything just the way you like it.

Remember to take extra care with mirrors and artwork, and consider leaving the decorative items until you have lived in the space for a few days. Sometimes, the perfect spot for your favourite reading chair is not where you initially imagined it would be!

Bathrooms: Quick Wins Matter

Bathrooms might be smaller spaces, but getting them functional makes such a difference to your comfort level. Begin with the absolute essentials – shower curtain up, toilet paper accessible, and towels at the ready. Check that all the plumbing is working properly before you start unpacking your toiletries and organising the cabinet space.

This is also the perfect time to set up any storage solutions you have planned. Those over-toilet shelves or under-sink organisers are much easier to install while the space is relatively empty. And here is a pro tip we have learned over years of helping people move: keep one box of cleaning supplies and toilet paper easily accessible – you would be surprised how often these items are needed during the unpacking process!

Living Areas: Where Life Happens

Now it is time to tackle those spaces where you will spend most of your waking hours. Start with the bigger pieces – getting your sofa and other furniture positioned first gives you a better sense of the space. Do not feel pressured to get it perfect straight away; you might find yourself shuffling things around as you settle in, and that is perfectly fine!

Testing your electronics while you still have the packaging materials handy is always a smart move. Nobody wants to discover their TV has an issue after they have already recycled all the boxes! Take your time with décor items, and remember – not everything needs to find its permanent home immediately. Sometimes, living in the space for a few days helps you better understand where things should go.

Garage and Storage: The Final Frontier

Do not feel guilty about leaving your garage or storage areas until last—these spaces often serve as temporary holding zones while you sort out the rest of your home, and that is fine! The garage, in particular, can be a bit of a puzzle, particularly if you plan to actually park your car in there (a revolutionary concept, we know!).

Start by creating distinct zones: one for tools and maintenance items, another for seasonal decorations, and perhaps a space for sports equipment or hobby gear. Installing proper storage solutions now, like wall-mounted shelves or overhead racks, can save you from the dreaded garage reorganisation project six months later. And remember, it is okay to keep some boxes packed if they contain items you will not need right away – make sure they are clearly labelled!
