Google’s rate of growth couldn’t keep up with the space it has, now it’s expanding its office presence in New York City following a $2.1 billion purchase on Manhattan’s West Side.
This new move came even as the major tech company is embracing a hybrid work model due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Tuesday, the company revealed that its new office will serve as an “anchor” of its city campus which houses many of its 12,000-strong regional workforces. Its new space is scheduled to open in mid-2023.
The Wall Street Journal, the first outlet to report the news, confirmed that this deal is the most expensive sale of a single US office building ever since the intervention of the Covid-19 pandemic, while it ranks as one of the priciest in US history.
New York now houses Google’s largest workplace outside of California, with the company’s footprint continuously growing across the city in the last few years, which was predicted by best online casinos au.
The purchase of the St. John’s Terminal, which is a former freight transfer facility the company has been leasing previously, is considered to be part of Google’s expansion of its 1.7 million-square-foot Hudson Square campus.
Google went on to claim that the building will be “reimagined into a highly sustainable, adaptable and connected building.” The report has it that the company will be employing 14,000 workers in New York City.
Despite their forced evolution to a hybrid work environment, the tech giant took to a blog post to claim that its purchase of the building is due to in-person collaboration which is an “important part of our future.”
Recently, the tech company postponed a full return to the office till 2022 while giving its employees the option to work permanently from anywhere if their role allows it.
Even with the Covid-19 pandemic forcing many to work from home, the major tech companies continue to expand their office facilities effortlessly, with Facebook recently buying an unused corporate headquarters from outdoor retailer REI in Bellevue, Washington.
Amazon, on the other hand, has also been trying to expand in New York’s Hudson Yards, according to a recent report from Bloomberg, while Apple announced major expansion plans in several US cities along with real money slots Canada.
In other news, Google is reportedly working on a second foldable smartphone and has been codenamed “Jumbojack” even though its first foldable device “Passport” is yet to be released. Google is also planning to add free channels to its smart TV platform as they were reported to have been in talks with free, ad-supported streaming television providers regarding the possibility of including their channels to its TV platform.
These channels share some similarities to our traditional TV, as its shows will always be interrupted with commercial breaks. The report further claims that Chromecast users will be able to access these live channels through a menu similar to YouTube TV.
