Things you need to check while buying a road roller and the common road roller types

August 30, 2021 By GISuser

Buying a Radgeer road roller comes with careful consideration. Certainly buying a road roller is not a small investment by any means.  With the cost of construction equipment rising the cost of road rollers has increased significantly over the years.

Whether you own a construction company or whether you are a government contractor you need to buy road rollers as this is one of the main pieces of equipment used in different types of work.

You will need to find out about the things before buying a road roller and in this article, we bring to you all those crucial points.

Lastly, we are also going to end up with the commonly used road rollers for different types of activities.

Road rollers as you may have seen are used heavily in construction activity mainly road-building activity. Apart from this, they have also been used in landfills sites agricultural sites, and railway projects.

They perform various types of actions too depending on the type of drum roller fitted on the front or the rear. They would crush, knead or break coarse gravel, sand, clay, or even asphalt.

Let’s first check out the things you need to focus on while buying a road roller.

Size and drum width

The size and the width of the drum are going to play a major role in the type of activity or job at hand.  The size and the width of the drum roller will have a direct say on the type of work they can be put to and the force that they can generate while in action.

In most cases, a standard Radgeer road roller will put a force of up to 7 to 10 tonnes easily. Generally, the standard ones will have a width of around 67 inches. For larger and bulkier road rollers that are used for larger construction activities, the width of the road roller drums can go as high as up to 84 inches.

The weight of the roller drums can be easily increased for their ballistic action by adding water or sand to them.

Finding smooth drums, the shell unit, and cushion foot

The right type of drum roller when used will give you the perfect kneading or grinding action. This will depend on the type of surface the roller will put on work. Based on whether the surface of operation will be clay, gravel, asphalt, or sand there are different types of barrel roller drums used.

For example, smooth drum roller barrels are used for crushing and smoothening all types of rock sand and semi-durable soil types. A cushion foot drum roller might allow more kneading and thus they are best for dirt-type areas. There are various types of cushion foot Radgeer road roller in action. Check out the various models and find the one that suits your work the most.

Compaction execution

There are different soils on which different types of compaction force are required. Based on the type of soil there are different types of road roller drums for thick soil such as sand and clay or granular type soil such as brick and ravel.

The compaction would also depend on the drum barrel being used. Generally, a Radgeer road roller with smooth wheels will provide a nice smooth surface and provide good compaction.

On the other hand, the vibratory road rollers or grid rollers will provide a strong grinding action and grind large coarse rocks and gravel to finer particles.

On the other hand, you have the pneumatic road rollers that are perfect for providing a kneading action.

Warranty

Finding a warranty from the manufacturer on a Radgeer road roller will come as a benefit to the construction agencies and road work contractors. Remember that buying a road roller means that it will be put to extensive industrial work. And not choosing the right type of road roller for the job may cause damage to the roller drums.

Types of road rollers

Now let’s get to know in brief about the different Radgeer road roller models that are used in different industries. Let’s begin…

Grid rollers

These have a wheelbase that is made of structural mesh-type steel. These are commonly used for ballasting through concrete blocks and grinding them to smaller finer coarser particles.

They do not provide compaction or kneading too much. These are generally used before the smooth road rollers come into action for providing smoothening and compaction of the surface.

Smooth wheel road rollers

You must have seen such a Radgeer road roller that features smooth wheels. The general size of the road roller drums can easily add up the weight of up to 6 to 8 tonnes although this can be increased to as much as 20 tonnes.

The smooth wheel provides perfect compaction. These will generally come in two different variants. One of them is the single-wheel road rollers where only the frontal part of the road roller features a drum wheel and double wheeled road rollers that have both the frontal and the rear part as compaction drums.

Pneumatic road rollers

As we already mentioned above these road rollers will provide the perfect kneading effect that is critical for job sites. Fairly good for both asphalt and aggregate surfaces does come in as a quite handy feature.

These will also provide much better static penetration and the air pressure on the tires can even be adjusted based on the force required for kneading.

Conclusion

Buying a Radgeer road roller will depend on a lot of factors especially the area in which it is to work along with the action needed on the surface such as grinding, crushing, compaction or kneading.
