If a week in San Diego for ESRIUC is on your agenda of things to do this year you might be interested in a few local tips and updates shared with me via Rupert Essinger of Esri… great stuff here!
San Diego Shortlist story map
This has been updated for 2013. As always, no ads or sponsors…just some places I think people might like to know about based on my explorations as a San Diego resident. (I’ve moved out of downtown to Pacific Beach so there are good finds in that neighborhood on the map too now):

San Diego Transportation Innovations story map
I made this with photos and info from local agencies. Check out some of the cool infrastructure and planning in San Diego. It is designed to give Esri users some ideas for how they can use story maps to tell the public about the results of all the hard work they do. GIS users are great at what they do but perhaps need to do more to toot their horn and show people the results of all the planning and analysis they do. Making a story map like this one is very easy – it uses the free map tour template – which you can download or find in the application gallery when you share your web map as an application.

Friends of San Diego Architecture story maps
This local non-profit has made two map tour story maps for checking out cool buildings in the area. They’ve made a page on their website that is a really nice model for how to integrate these sorts of apps into an existing website. The page also includes PDF versions of the tours that people can download if they want to print them out as a handout they can use on a walking tour.

San Diego Trolley has been realigned
The trolley line that goes to the Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Park, and the Convention Center is now the Green line. This is great for User Conference attendees who are staying in Little Italy, Old Town, or Mission Valley because they no longer need to change trolley lines to get the show! Just get on the Green Line to downtown and it takes you right there.
