June 7, 2013 By Editor

Just in time for the 2013 SOTMUS event taking place June 8-9 in San Fran, The 2013 OpenStreetMap Data Report – some stunning and interactive data visualizations that show how active the OpenStreetMap community is, how fast it continues to grow, and how competitive the open data community is becoming.

There’s no doubt that the spread of love about OSM is hitting and epidemic scale! At this year’s SOTMUS event, the Mapbox team will be presenting details of the 2013 OSM report, a comprehensive look at the explosive growth of the OpenStreetMap movement.

Highlights include:

Visualizing Road Updates:  Stunning maps of New York City, Tokyo, London, and more which reflect areas with active users that have recently been updated by Mapbox’s automated editing tools, which launched in late 2012.

Before & After Map Visualizations:  Between May, 5, 2012 and March 22, 2013, more than 820,000 building footprints were added to OpenStreetMap in Chicago. User Ian Dees led the import of building data from the city government that both improved addressing to locations in the city and made the map more useful. In the OpenStreetMap Data Report 2013, an interactive visualization enables your to see the Chicago map before and after was data was imported.

Visualization of How Often OpenStreetMap is Updated: OpenStreetMap is constantly improved in real time by thousands of volunteers around the world. The OpenStreetMap Data Report 2013 includes an interactive visualization demonstrating maps being updated in real-time.

Here are some other key stats about the growth of OpenStreetMap:
·         OpenStreetMap doubled its registered user base over the past 18 months.
·         As of January 2013, over 1 million people have contributed mapping data to OpenStreetMap.
·         Every month, nearly 20,000 people add data to the map.
·         In 2012, 124,000 people contributed to OpenStreetMap.
·         Every week, over 1,000 new individuals start mapping.
·         As of June 2013, there are over 21 million miles mapped on OpenStreetMap.
