Metadigm Services Engineered Substation Goes Live for Athens Utilities Board

June 25, 2012 By Editor

Power engineering project contributes to stability and safety of power grid in the Southeast

ATLANTA-Metadigm Services, which provides utilities real-world solutions for asset management and maintenance as well as smart meter deployment, today announces the completion of a new substation engineering project for Athens Utilities Board (AUB). The 161 Kv to 12.47 Kv substation is located in Niota, Tennessee and primarily provides power to the surrounding community and improves reliability to Athens Utility Board’s (AUB) overall grid.

“AUB has turned to Metadigm’s Power Engineering group for over a decade. This is the fourth substation they have engineered for us.”

"We designed the substation from the ground up—the foundations, structures, wiring, relaying, SCADA and TVA interfacing," relates Timothy W. Rauch, P.E., Vice President of Engineering at Metadigm Services. "The substation is built on the side of a hill on a one acre city block within the City of Niota, which increased the complexity of the design."

The substation serves the city of Niota and provides power to homes and businesses in the area. It also provides back up power to the Athens Utility Board’s North Athens Substation. "The load in Niota had grown to the point that AUB could no longer supply power to the city from the North Athens Substation. We had to build a substation to meet not only the load from Niota, but also provide backup to several circuits out of the North Athens Substation, as well as future service to an industrial park," says Larry Monteen, Superintendent of Power at the Athens Utilities Board. "AUB has turned to Metadigm’s Power Engineering group for over a decade. This is the fourth substation they have engineered for us."

The substation just came online, providing the residents of the area experience with more consistent voltage and a significant improvement in reliability of service.

Metadigm Engineering has designed 30 substation projects in the last 3 years and is licensed in 6 states. Each substation has an effective life of approximately half a century.
