Should You Use Deck Oil or Deck Stain?

October 14, 2023 By GISuser

A wood deck requires proper restoration and sealing, no matter its age. However, the products available for preservation can be overwhelming to choose from, especially if you know only a little about their application and uses. For instance, most homeowners wonder whether deck oil or deck stain will be better to revive or secure their deck. Let’s get the difference between these two solutions right to understand what you need now.

Deck oil Vs. deck stain

While the choice is more about personal preferences, you can focus on your expectations from the resulting look and investment of time and energy for deck wood maintenance. Stains typically transform the shade and appearance of the deck based on what tint you pick. With decking oil, you can elevate its aesthetics and structural integrity. Your deck will become durable and protected. If you choose oil for wood exteriors, something like outlast q8 log oil can work. A chemical solution like this keeps the wooden surface’s natural beauty intact because of its transparency, whereas chemical suspension types of wood preservatives can make the surface murky or cloudy. So, please be careful about the choice.

Benefits of decking oil

Buying decking oil can be a wise decision to save your wood from the damaging effects of UV rays, harsh weather, and moisture. The transparent, colored oil nourishes the wood’s natural features. If you choose a shade like dark brown, your wooden deck can fight UV rays better. Still, that’s not mandatory. You must select an oil color based on your wood deck’s natural appearance. High-end preservative oil generally provides comprehensive color options, from natural base to gold to grey. Remember, oil helps retain the natural color of the wood, unlike wood stains. In some cases, wood can look slightly darker, but the wood grain’s visibility will remain intact. It’s difficult to expect this from deck paints and stains.

Decking oil application

It’s an easy project anyone can handle to protect their wooden deck from cracking, splitting, and warping issues. These are common challenges faced by aging wooden surfaces. Nevertheless, you can oil the porch through a sprayer or applicator pad. No matter the application method, the wood surface would need preparation. Ensure that you clean your deck thoroughly to eliminate any remnants from it. If you do it properly, you can repeat this process next year. Oil takes about 4-8 hours to settle down. But you can give it one full day or more to make it rainproof. So, please avoid hurrying for the best results.

Decking oil can be water or oil-based solutions. Most experts vouch for the latter. If you select your product carefully, your deck will enjoy good health. Your maintenance project will also be cost-effective. Because these preservative oils need only thin layers to be laid down, the uneven wooden texture can easily be retained. Deck wood will offer the same traction and grip as earlier, reducing the chances of slip and fall. Remember to pick one that’s pet- and human-friendly when shopping for it. If you ensure all this, you will have a deck that looks healthy even after many years.
