Maxar collected new satellite imagery on March 27th that reveals the Russian naval exercise (known as Umka-2021) in progress in the Arctic.
The exercise prominently and publicly featured multiple nuclear submarines breaking through the ice near Alexandra Island. Maxar’s satellite images reveal several locations where submarines had broken through the thick ice (reportedly which can be nearly 1.5-meters thick) including one position where a Delta IV-class submarine can be clearly seen partially above the ice. In the link provided below, you can download several views of the activity including an earlier March 25th satellite image (panchromatic only) that also shows a submarine above the ice.
