In January 6th, 2016, The New York Public Library made over 187K digital items in the public domain available for high resolution download. This is one of many experiments by the NYPL Labs to help patrons understand and explore what was contained in that release.
With 10s of thousands of images, photos, and maps available it really is tough selecting one favorite, however, I do always seem to gravitate towards transit maps as one of my personal faves… enjoy! The map above depicts the NYC transit system in 1917 – Hammond’s Complete map of New York City

The NYPL’s public domain release is more than a generous gesture—it’s a call to action for individuals to engage with history, culture, and knowledge. Whether you’re diving into the library’s digital collection or traveling to the city on a Niagara Falls to NYC bus, opportunities to connect with the past and present abound.
Embrace this blend of digital innovation and physical exploration to enrich your understanding of the world around you
