New York State GIS Clearinghouse

May 4, 2005 By GISuser

The NYS GIS Coordinating Body promotes and facilitates the development, effective use, and sharing of geographic information. It also removes barriers to implementing geographic information technology to improve the delivery of public services, protect the public and the environment, and enhance the business climate for the benefit of the State, its municipalities, businesses and citizens. This is a fine resource for locating GIS data, orthophotos, and educational material within the State of New York.

Recent additions to the portal include:

  • 2004 orthophotos for 7 counties now available
  • 2004 real property data
  • ALIS road center line data
  • Digital orthophoto application

Visitors will find this resource to be very rich in data. That’s the result of a cooperative agreement in place in the State. The NYS GIS Data Sharing Cooperative is a group of governmental entities and not-for-profit organizations that have executed Data Sharing Agreements for the purpose of improving access to GIS data among members. The Data Sharing Cooperative was primarily developed to encourage public agencies in New York to share in the creation, use, and maintenance of GIS data sets at the least possible cost.

Of particular interest in the orthophoto application – a doorway to convenient access to digital orthoimagery of New York State. Through this application visitors can view and download imagery. The Mapping Application features responsive navigation tools, extensive searching capabilities, and several mapping options. Through the Mapping Application, custom maps can be created and printed, imagery viewed, and data downloaded for use in a GIS.

Note: Direct download of NY imagery is also provided at http://www.nysgis.state.ny.us/gateway/mg/nysdop_download.htm

Another interesting resource provided is the Helpdesk. Using this site visitors can search for information of submit a request for help. FAQs and online info is also provided. See http://www.gishost.com/gishelpdesk/

AS far as community resources go for NY-based GIS techs, the portal provides access to newsletters, user groups, and online discussion groups. See the “Communications” link.

NY Orthophoto gateway is a great resource!

Thumbs up to this fabulous resource! http://www.nysgis.state.ny.us/
