ER Mapper Releases Free ECW and JPEG 2000 Compression Software

January 10, 2005 By GISuser

ER Mapper today announced that its free image compression application has been updated to output to the new JPEG 2000 compression format as well as to the industry standard ECW format.

— Perth, Australia, 10 January 2005 – The free ECW JPEG 2000 Compressor allows users to compress images of up to 500 MB in size.  Geospatial and CAD professionals use compression to reduce the size of imagery datasets, whilst still retaining the original quality.

ER Mapper’s ECW JPEG 2000 Compressor is a stable, commercial quality tool for creating ECW and JPEG 2000 image datasets.  The ECW JPEG 2000 Compressors generous 500 MB allowance means that the vast majority of an organization’s imagery compression needs are handled by this free application.  Larger images can be compressed with the flagship ER Mapper application or by building applications using the ECW JPEG 2000 Software Development Kit.

Mike Dunne, ER Mapper’s Chief Technology Officer said, “The ECW JPEG 2000 Compressor is the ideal tool for every GIS user – it is easy to use, it gives great results, it is super fast, and it is free.  We are happy to offer a free compression tool to support the geospatial community.”

ER Mapper is at the forefront of JPEG 2000 technology development.  ER Mapper is the only vendor in the Geospatial industry to commit to developing its own 100% compliant JPEG 2000 implementation in order to provide superior solutions for multi-terabyte JPEG 2000 images.

For organizations that require unlimited JPEG 2000 and ECW compression, there is an easy upgrade path to the soon-to-be-released ER Mapper 7.  ER Mapper 7 contains the unlimited version of the ECW JPEG 2000 compressor, ideal for those companies wishing to complete more extensive compression routines. This truly means unlimited compression enabling multiple test compressions to be run, unlimited file sizes to be compressed and the additional processing benefits of ER Mapper to be gained all for the cost of a single ER Mapper license.

The free compressor offers 8-bit RGB and grayscale, lossy (and lossless for JPEG 2000) compressions into the ECW and JPEG 2000 formats for images up to 500MB in size.  People wishing to perform non-8 bit images or wanting to compress larger images should use the ER Mapper 7 product, which features variable bit-depth and loss-less compression options. ER Mapper can also mosaic, color balance and compress TB size image mosaics.
