SFGiants Win One For @cageyjames at #FOSS4G

Dang, some guys just have all the luck! Lucky for good old @cageyjames as he’s in Denver for a couple of days sucking back loads of Open Source Kool-Aid with more than 800 other GeoGeeks, unfortunate;y not yours truly though… And so as luck would have it for James, his beloved Giants are visiting Coors Field this week so naturally he managed to hit The Rockpile to enjoy watching and gloating a little as The Giants actually won a game. So, in payment for our little friendly wager, here’s a classic SFGiants image that I captured at Coors field last summer, although I believe the Rockies actually opened up a can of Giants “Whoop-ass” that day.

Kung-Fu Panda & The Giants win one for James!

To James and all the other GeoGeeks at #FOSS4G, enjoy the Denver, Colorado hospitality, enjoy the Kool Aid, and I can’t believe I’m saying it… Go Giants  (forgive me)

Webinar, Pinpointing Addresses in Will County Ill.

An interesting idea as ILGISA will be hosting a webinar on Nov 10, 2011 to discuss the recent completion of a three year project locating over 300 thousand addresses in Will County. About the project… This project took into account the current FGDC/NENA address standards. GIS personnel reviewed several data and image resources to verify the accuracy of addresses. After technicians would position the address locations in GIS, specialists would perform quality control tests to insure the updated addresses aligned with existing data in other county databases. These tests included multi-level geocoding, database relations, and python scripts. The final address layer will be maintained by E9-1-1 who can coordinate with emergency and municipal personnel to insure the most accurate data.

The presentation will cover the tasks used in ArcGIS, and the plan to provide an interface for non-county personnel to upload their address information.  Event will take place at 12 noon CST – Register online via the ILGISA EventBrite page

Open Source Event Gathers Momentum – The Road to FOSS4G Heads To Denver CO

Preparations are well under way in Denver for this year’s FOSS4G event, scheduled to take place Sept 12-16. We hear from the organizing team today about the final plans and expectations… the event, which will take place in Denver from Sept. 12-16,  has gathered a great deal of momentum, with more than 600 attendees from 31 countries and 43 states signed up so far. It’s not too late to take advantage of this unique learning opportunity that presents a world-class program at great value to attendees, and in a beautiful setting.

Please note, even if you aren’t using Open Source solutions, you can take advantage of the event, particularly the one day intro to open source on Tuesday, designed to educate and inform new users of open source technology and solutions.  Here’s what some are saying about the event on the blogosphere:

Still Thinking About FOSS4G 2011?

Thinking about heading to the Colorado Front Range for this year’s OpenSource Mapping Love Fest aka. FOSS4G? Perhaps you’ve been giving it some thought but are still undecided. Check out this fine video put together by Tyler Mitchell and all the other GeoGeeks involved with planning the event and perhaps they might convince you to book your travel. If that video isn’t enough then I suggest you give this blog post by Peter Batty a read… if anything Peter’s comments will definitely encourage you to pause for a moment and seriously ask yourself if Open source solutions can play a part in your organization. Another thought leader, James Fee, has also offered up his thoughts on FOSS4G and has penned a blog post on why you can’t afford to miss out on FOSS4G 2011. Finally, FOSS4G planning team member Brian Timoney has also offered up some compelling reasons for you to consider heading to FOSS4G in a post titled Cooking Up a Geospatial Business Model In A Web World which was recently published on his Mapbrief blog.

Finally, a few compelling reasons that I can suggest for heading to FOSS4G include: the addition of a special day specifically for those new to Open Source or pondering making the leap to Open Source and the impressive list of presenters that include: Peter Batty, Steve Coast, Dr. Carl Reed, Schuyler Erle, Paul Ramsay, and Brion Timoney. There’s a fabulous lineup of hands-on workshops led by industry leaders and brilliant minds. Oh, and you’ll also likely have many opportunities to drop a micro brew or two with loads of cool GeoGeeks at the Wynkoop brewpub… who can’t resist that?

Save The Date – WhereCamp SoCal 2 To Hit Santa Monica August 26-27

Here’s a geoGeek meetup of interest to anyone in SoCal or interested in heading to Socal next month… Event Details: WhereCamp SoCal – Friday, August 26th (evening) – Saturday, August 27th Google Santa Monica Office  Santa Monica, CA

About the event – Tentative plan is for scheduled Ignite talks Friday evening followed by unscheduled sessions Saturday. This event picks up where the team left off last year at  WhereCamp SoCal which took place July 17-18, 2010 in San Diego

The goal of WhereCamp is to simply encourage social cross pollination of ideas between developers, makers, artists. By being totally free to participants it can attract voices who otherwise simply cannot afford to speak. It is a complement to Where20 in that it provides the kind of time to really dwell on and examine a topic.
