Something innovative from the CartoDB crew (timely given their recent announcement of CartoDB Enterprise) … The Map Academy, a series of online mapping courses – Learn to create maps on the web and visualize geospatial data.
The first course is ‘Online Mapping for Beginners’, which gives a walk through of many CartoDB capabilities. It’s available as 5 ‘chapters’ of 10 minutes or so each that you can follow along with at your own pace. Indeed there’s no shortage of cool and amazing technology to touch, see, and hear about at ESRIUC, actually, its almost overwhelming so creating a list of just 10 awesome things I saw is no simple task. Hopefully I won’t crush any feelings for those not mentioned here and just let it be known that this list could likely easily be rehashed into a “100 Cool things” list if I had the time! Once again another International Esri user conference has come and gone. Myself, like about 15,000 others who made the trip to San Diego are now coming down from a big “Geo High” and are organizing our notes and contact information from all the great things we saw and fabulous people we met. The week began much like most other conference week’s did, with loads of excitement and Esri President Jack Dangermond addressing the huge crowd in attendance at the opening plenary. I felt that Dangermond really set the tone for the week with his opening remark that may have come over as rather surprising to many – he expressed how “something is changing, and we’re about to see GIS reach its full potential… there’s something afoot and I encourage you to notice it.” An exciting and bold statement I felt but after the week was done it did indeed seem rather appropriate and most of us at the conference did indeed go out there to notice it.
The countdown is on… I’m scrambling here to prepare for a busy week at the annual Esri user conference in San Diego. I’m always interested in some of the fun developer meets and events that are planned during UC week – these are always pretty geeky, very interesting, and if lucky there’s usually some beer around as well! And so, the following are just 5 activities of interest that the Geo Developer or wanna-be developer mike consider taking part in while at the UC:

This really cool announcement came my way via the Esri Story Maps team… If people took last Thursday off for the long July 4th weekend they may have missed that along with the various updates to ArcGIS Online, we’ve released a completely new story map app that we think will be game changer especially for GIS professionals with a lot of narrative text, maps, images etc that they want to present.” Enter the Story Map Journal
We are assured that Story Maps will be represented pretty extensively at this year’s International User Conference. Attendees will hear about them and see live example story maps on the main stage (likely even from Jack himself I’m told), as well as in the various demo islands on the exhibition hall floor, demo theaters, technical workshops, and user presentations. Via the FOSS4G gang… a call for maps! From the organizers… We invite contributions to the FOSS4G Map Galleryto build an exciting and vibrant exhibit of the very best in mapping. This Map Gallery will not only demonstrate the work of delegates but also act as a reference point for the current state of mapping more widely. We encourage all delegates to share one example of their work and help us create a cartographic record of the FOSS4G 2014 conference.
Contributing to the FOSS4G Map Gallery is simple: make a map involving open source technology or open data, and share that map online! The submission form will open on June 26th and close on August 31st; that’s about eight weeks to pull together the projects you’ve been working with over the last year or more. You are encouraged to submit your application via the FOSS4G web site.
