New Android App Provides Instant Proximity and Safety Information on Nuclear Power Plants in U.S.

NuclearWatchDawg Offers Users Facts, Not Fiction – New Android App Provides Instant Proximity and Safety Information on Nuclear Power Plants in U.S.

CHICAGO– The devastating earthquake and tsunami that touched off a near nuclear disaster in Japan has ignited a new wave of fear in the United States about the safety of nuclear power plants in this country. Enter NuclearWatchDawg, a new mobile application that helps users parse fact from fiction by providing information on the power plants in their immediate vicinity.

“By instantly providing users with facts like the age of the plant, current operating status and links to safety records, they can draw informed conclusions about their safety and make informed decisions about how to manage it. We hope this will eliminate some of the rumor-based hysteria while educating residents”

The free app, currently available for the Android market, uses GPS technology to identify a user’s location, and then provides a full list of nuclear power plants and a map of the closest plant within a 50 mile radius; information including the age, power output, license and ownership of the closest plant; as well as links to more detailed information on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission website.

“Knowledge is power,” said Lee Guthman, president of WatchDawg, the developer of NuclearWatchDawg.

“By instantly providing users with facts like the age of the plant, current operating status and links to safety records, they can draw informed conclusions about their safety and make informed decisions about how to manage it. We hope this will eliminate some of the rumor-based hysteria while educating residents,” said Guthman.

Users can put their address into the app or use the GPS technology, and NuclearWatchDawg will identify not only nuclear power plants in the vicinity, but also nuclear plant disposal locations, nuclear labs located at universities and colleges and other facilities that pose a nuclear risk.

NuclearWatchDawg is now available free for Android smart phones and is expected to be available for iPhones and iPads soon. Learn more at www.nuclearwatchdawg.com.
