Are Residential Aluminium Doors Worth It?

February 10, 2025 By GISuser

You know what I’ve noticed lately around my neighbourhood in Sydney? Those svelte aluminium doors appear to be put in every other home. I began to wonder what made them so unique when they began to appear in my neighbourhood in greater numbers. I initially didn’t think much about it.

I am aware that choosing new doors for your house might be a daunting task. Traditional wooden doors, contemporary PVC doors, robust steel doors, and now aluminium doors are so many alternatives that they can make your head spin. But here’s the thing: aluminium doors keep catching my eye, not just because they’re trendy. People are constantly complimenting them on their appearance and longevity.

To be honest, I was initially suspicious. So, like any inquisitive homeowner, I did further research. And let me tell you, what I found out about these doors really surprised me. Grab a cuppa, and I’ll walk you through everything I learned about aluminium doors and help you determine if they’re worth your hard-earned dollars.

The Tough Cookie of Door Materials

Let me start with something that really blew my mind. You know how wooden doors can be a bit of a pain? They swell up during the wet season, shrink when it’s dry, and don’t even get me started on termites! Well, here’s where aluminium doors shine – they’re like the heavyweight champion of durability.

Someone from Aussie Aluminium Enterprise told me some shocking tales during our recent conversation. The same aluminium doors that one of their clients has had for more than two decades are still in good condition! No warping, no rotting, nothing. Even better? If you live near the beach like I do, these doors laugh in the face of that salty air that usually wreaks havoc on everything else.

The thing that really grabbed me, though, is that even though these doors are made like tanks, they feel quite light when you open them. Having the best of both worlds is what it is! And trust me when I say that after years of enduring a sticky wooden door, the smooth slide of an aluminium door feels like pure ecstasy.

Keeping Cool Without Breaking the Bank

This is something that made me chuckle, but in a positive way! These doors are proper little energy-savers. I was a bit sceptical when I first heard about thermal breaks and double-glazing (sounds fancy, right?), but let me tell you what I discovered. My neighbour Sarah installed aluminium doors last summer, and her electricity bills have dropped noticeably. She reckons the air con doesn’t have to work nearly as hard to keep her place cool.

You know what, I found something really interesting while I was researching. You can recycle aluminium 100% of the time! I mean, who knew? Apparently, you can recycle it over and over without it losing any of its strength. That definitely made me feel better about considering it for my own home. It’s like getting a high-five from Mother Nature while keeping your home comfy!

Looking Sharp (Without Trying Too Hard)

Now, let’s talk about looks – because who doesn’t want their home to look fantastic? The versatility of aluminium doors is what truly drew my attention. Are you looking for sliding doors for home that complement your ultra-modern style? Done. Prefer something more traditional? They’ve got you covered. It’s like having a chameleon for a door!

I’ve seen some gorgeous setups in my neighbourhood. The house down the street recently got black-framed aluminium doors, and I swear it looks straight out of a home design magazine. It seems as though nothing separates you from the garden when you’re seated inside since the frames are so thin. Stunningly beautiful!

The “Set and Forget” Factor

Here’s what sealed the deal for me – these doors are basically the “set and forget” type. You know how wooden doors are like demanding pets that need constant attention? Sanding here, painting there, checking for termites everywhere? Well, aluminium doors are more like that low-maintenance friend who’s always reliable.

A quick wipe with some soapy water now and then, and you’re done! No painting, no sealing, no worrying about termites having a feast. My friend (a bit of a perfectionist, this one) has had his aluminium doors for five years now, and the most maintenance he’s done is giving them a quick clean when he’s doing his windows. Talk about a time-saver!

Safe as Houses (Literally!)

Let’s talk security – because that’s what got me really interested. The folks at Aussie Aluminium Enterprise showed me their multi-point locking systems, and I’ve got to say, I was impressed! These aren’t your basic lock-and-key setups. We’re talking about proper security features that would give any would-be burglar a major headache.

What really caught my attention was the toughened safety glass. A friend of mine in real estate mentioned that this is one of the first things home buyers look for these days. It also makes logic, doesn’t it? You want that peace of mind when you’re making an investment in your house. In addition, these doors are fire-resistant, which is an unexpected plus. Living in Australia, that’s definitely something worth thinking about!

Show Me the Money!

Hmmm… about the price? I will tell you upfront that aluminium doors are not the most affordable choice available. I took a big breath when I first noticed the price tag. However, the truth is that you must consider the wider picture.

Think about it this way – how much would you spend over the years maintaining wooden doors? Or replacing those cheaper options that don’t last? One of my neighbours just replaced their budget doors for the third time in ten years! Meanwhile, quality aluminium doors just keep on keeping on. Plus, with the energy savings on your bills (my electricity costs dropped more than I expected), these doors start to make a lot of financial sense.

Making the Smart Choice

After doing a lot of research and speaking with several vendors, I’ve discovered that choosing the correct installer is essential. Isn’t it like everything else in life? Even if you purchase the greatest product in the world, problems could arise if it is not installed correctly.

I spent quite a bit of time checking out different companies and their track records. The good ones will talk you through everything, explain the warranty (make sure you get one!), and won’t disappear once they’ve finished the job. In my books, that after-sales support is worth its weight in gold. Aussie Aluminium Enterprise even gave me a complete rundown of what to expect during an aluminium door installation and how to get the most out of my doors long-term.
