4 Uses Of An Inclinometer You Should Know

June 29, 2021 By Editor

Various tools in the modern age have shaped the way we structure buildings, make aircrafts, check structural strength, and prevent future hazards. One of these important tools is an inclinometer.

Experts use this tool to measure the magnitude of slope and elevation or depression of an object. Other than that, a type of inclinometers called Bubble inclinometers is used in applications like Aviation, engineering and military uses. There are various types of this tool that enable engineers to take important measurements. Keep reading this article if you are interested to learn more about the uses of an Inclinometer!

1. Structural Performance

Retaining structures need proper inspection as they are prone to lateral pressure. The movements in the ground render them adverse effects that can cause a severe problem. The worst thing is that these deformations in the retaining structure cannot be guessed, and they can occur even after a construction project is done. One of the uses of inclinometers is that they can be used to prevent these deformations. Engineers install the inclinometers in the boreholes or in the elements of a structure to be aware of any possible hazards before time. The inclinometers can provide useful data about the structural changes, so authorities like the military have enough time for action.

2. Monitoring Landslides

Landslides are a constant hazard for structure. There is no telling when a landslide could occur and cause the whole structure to collapse. But with tools like inclinometers, engineers can have an idea about when a landslide could occur. Landslide monitoring with an inclinometer shows the integrity of shear zones and provides data about the movement of landslides. Installation of inclinometers depends on various factors in the case of landslide monitoring. Regardless of the place, they are installed, they allow a perfect measurement of ground creeps. An added benefit is measuring the rate of landslide movement, so no stone is left unturned by civil engineers to prevent the adverse effects.

3. Stability Of Slopes

Slopes like fill embankments are important for various structures. But ensuring that the integrity of these man-made slopes is up to the mark is a real challenge for engineers. Any changes in the ground can cause the collapse of a slope. The measurement of the stability of different slopes is done perfectly with inclinometers. The installation methods for checking slope stability are the same as for landslide monitoring, and the results are perfect for civil engineers.

4. Tunnel Drilling Monitoring

Tunnels and shafts are important elements of the structure. Like all the other building elements, you have to ensure that they stay strong over time by ground movements. Displacements of any roadblocks can wreak havoc on the whole structure. The best solution for monitoring these Tunnel drilling projects is using inclinometers for monitoring. These devices can check the adequacy of the ground, find out any flaws in the project and revise the approach of constructing these tunnels. As the inclinometers can be used to find any flaws, they can easily inform the engineers before construction if there are any ground failures in the construction site. Military personnel also use these inclinometers for making tunnels.
