Census Bureau Releases International Population Estimates and Projections

December 18, 2020 By Editor

DEC. 15, 2020 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released new population estimates and projections for over 200 countries and areas through the year 2100. These data are available from the redesigned International Data Base (IDB) web tool.

The IDB consists of estimates and projections of demographic indicators, including population size and growth (by sex and single year of age up to 100 and over), and components of change (mortality, fertility, and net migration) for 228 countries and areas. The Census Bureau periodically updates the IDB as new data become available.

New updates include:

  • Population projections through the year 2100 for over 200 countries and areas.
  • Projections for 15 countries refined with new data from censuses, surveys and administrative records: Central African Republic, Ghana, Guyana, Indonesia, Japan, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, United States, Vietnam and Zambia.
  • Redesigned IDB web interface to introduce a new comprehensive set of tools, features and data visualizations. Additional tools and features are scheduled for release in the coming year.

For more than 20 years, the IDB has provided online access to global demographic data for government agencies, educators, researchers and the public.

Estimates and projections from the International Data Base are available at www.census.gov/programs-surveys/international-programs/about/idb.html.
