Washington D.C. – In celebration of national “Take our Daughters and Sons To Work Day”, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) will join the Microsoft Corporation to host a “Girls and STEM” event at the Microsoft Innovation & Policy Center in Washington D.C. Inspired by President Obama’s call-to-action for employers to open their doors on Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day to include young people who are typically unable to participate in this day, the event will give girls an opportunity to engage directly with women working in the STEM fields, gaining insight into their personal leadership journeys, and learning how they overcame adversity to succeed in the STEM space.
Girl Scouts 14 and up from three local councils, including the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay, Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, and Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital will participate in an interactive roundtable with women leaders from Microsoft, as well as NASA’s Chief Scientist, Dr. Ellen Stofan, who serves as NASA’s principal advisor to their Administrator on the agency’s science programs, planning and investments.
The roundtable will be followed by an “Hour of Code” during which girls will participate in a hands-on learning experience in basic coding using Microsoft technology. With data clearly demonstrating the importance of providing girls with female role models in the STEM fields, Microsoft and NASA are stepping up on this important day to bring girls together with women in the STEM fields of today, to learn how to succeed in the STEM world of tomorrow.
