Locate15 and Destination Spatial look forward to welcoming students, teachers and those passionate about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to the Exhibition Open Day on 10 March 2015 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre 10am to 5pm.
During the Exhibition Open Day, schools, teachers and students from primary to university are invited to engage with the Destination Spatial S.T.E.M educational program. There will be 90-minute sessions (15 minute per topic) designed to get minds thinking and inspired, while supporting these key areas of education for the spatial industry.
There is no charge to attend. Bookings are recommended for large groups however walk-ins are welcome.
Topics will include:
- An introduction to Queensland Globe
- Neighbourhood safety
- How hazard ready should you be?
- Landscapes in the Australian Curriculum Year 8: QTopo – Queensland’s online topographic mapping tool.
- Your Z Day plan? Preparing for a zombie apocalypse.
- Should we build the next amusement park on your street?
Locate15 has been developed to inspire not only those working within the industry but also youth who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Queensland’s Department of Natural Resources and Mines has recently hired a dedicated spatial educator to develop lesson plans designed to motivate young people to consider careers in Spatial as well as assist teachers in content to support their students.
Destination Spatial is an industry initiative designed to promote spatial careers and will have a stand at Locate15 with guidance about spatial careers for students, teachers and parents.
The Educational Program has been developed and will be delivered by Mick Law, Senior Project Officer, Queensland Spatial Information Council, Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Queensland.
Mick has been involved in geospatial education at the school level for nearly 15 years. Originally a classroom teacher, Mick established geospatial programs at two Queensland schools before managing ESRI Australia’s GIS in-schools program. Mick then established his own geospatial educational consultancy, Contour Education, which focuses on making geospatial technology as easy as possible to integrate into the Australian classroom. Mick now has a role with Queensland’s Department of Natural Resources and Mines advocating for geospatial technologies and developing resources for teachers and students to bring these exciting tools into Queensland classrooms.
