Super Bowl Transit Perks! Brand New NYC Subway Maps For The Super Bowl

January 28, 2014 By Editor

There’s no doubt that New York and New Jersey will be seeing some awesome economic benefits and perks as a result of hosting the 2014 Super Bowl. One added perk of being the host area is maps, in particular, sweet, new Transit maps!  This from the Business Insider who’ve reported on the MTA rolling out some new mapping to help people navigate between the Big Apple and Jersey…

For the first time ever, the MTA has made a regional public transportation map for New York and New Jersey. The map was commissioned specifically for the Super Bowl, which will take place at MetLife Stadium in February. It includes Manhattan’s subway lines, as well as New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and PATH trains between Manhattan and New Jersey. For out-of-towners staying in Manhattan and using public transportation to get to the game, it will come in handy. For New Yorkers, it’s a cool new take on the plain old subway map, at least the Manhattan portion of it. Read more

And this via Gizmodo… For the first time ever, the Metropolitan Transit Authority is releasing a regional transit map that covers everywhere from Newark, New Jersey, to downtown Manhattan—including, of course, the MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands, where the big game is set to take place. The map brings together lines not only from the New York City subway but also New Jersey Transit, Metro-North, PATH, Long Island Railroad, and Amtrak. Now you can see why the MTA is calling this "the first mass transit Super Bowl."

About the map:
The diagram shows all interconnections between the regional transit services, and highlights with a football icon those areas where Super Bowl -related events will occur on both sides of the Hudson River.  The diagram will appear on all transit provider web sites, as well as in Super Bowl web sites, guides, publications, mobile apps, and folding pocket maps to be distributed by the Host Committee.  It was designed by Yoshiki Waterhouse of Vignelli Associates, the firm that designed the popular interactive diagram for The Weekender web site.

More than 400,000 visitors are expected to the region for game-related events, and about 80,000 will attend the game on Sunday, February 2. With public transportation serving a critical function during Super Bowl week, each involved transportation agency will play a role.

Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road, will provide additional trains during off-peak hours. Metro-North will implement its Holiday Service schedule.  The MTA will offer a series of four commemorative Super Bowl-branded MetroCards, available for purchase at all MTA stations.

Collectively, during Super Bowl week, NJ Transit, PATH, and the MTA will provide more frequent rail service and faster connections to support expected visitors to Super Bowl Boulevard (located on Broadway, between 34th and 48th Streets), and other miscellaneous, high-profile events throughout the region. The transit agencies will each halt ongoing construction for an agency-specific timeframe during Super Bowl week and weekend.
