Tablet Tips – Apple, Android or Windows? A tablet buying guide

Some helpful tips via the Vancouver Sun to help those in search of a new tablet…

When Apple launched its first iPad some skeptics predicted it would be a bust.

Less than four years later, Apple announced this week the latest updates to its iPad lineup that not only thrived, it launched an entire tablet market.

The analyst firm IDC predicts this quarter more tablets will ship than desktops and laptops combined and by 2015, tablets are expected to outpace PCs in annual shipments.

Back in 2010, it you wanted a tablet computer, the choice was easy. Apple owned the market. Android tablets have changed that, with a growing number of manufacturers tapping into that market with a range of offerings from the overgrown smartphones known as phablets to full-size tablets and everything in between. Apple’s lead is slipping. ABI Research reported recently that during the second quarter of this year, the number of Android-powered tablets surpassed Apple’s iOS tablets for the first time.

And where does that leave us as consumers? If the answer is confused, don’t worry, you have lots of company. And when it comes to buying in this market, there is no one size fits all. First, consider what size tablet will work best for you? Then are you immersed in the Apple world with an iPhone and/or an Apple computer? An Android fan? Or are you a diehard Microsoft Windows user, who doesn’t mind the much smaller app selection for those devices?

Once you’ve decided on the big questions, it’s helpful to narrow down your choices and particularly if you’re new to tablets, there’s nothing like touching them and trying them out before you make a final decision
