ESRIUC Notes – ArcGIS Pro: The Future of ArcGIS but very Familiar

July 16, 2013 By Editor

Something new that was touted this year pre-ESRIUC and at the event was ArcGIS Pro – according to Esri, this is the future. Essentially, ArcGIS Pro is the culmination of user feedback, requests, and desired functionality. Using various forms of customer feedback, Esri is delivering what is known as ArcGIS Pro and you’ll be pleased to know that it’s the first 64 bit application and the next generation of ArcGIS desktop.

ArcGIS Pro was shown at the 2013 ESRIUC during the plenary session by Jim McKinney of Esri during a presentation titled "Unveiling the new ArcGIS Professional Application"

Notes: ArcGIS Pro New, professional GIS app "for you" – The Goals of Pro – build what you’ve been asking for (ideas.arcgis.com and other feedback mechanisms)

  • A 64 bit application – past display, showing tools when you need them, 3D, tight integration with Esri solutions like ArcGIS.com and Portal for ArcGIS
  • Demo from City of Denver sows a ribbon based app with home tabs and quick access to editing tools and geoprocessing functionality
  • A multi-view environment for comparative visualization – imagine 2 views that are linked, one in 2D the other in 3D – interactive link!
  • Any view can be floated and dragged to another area
  • Will it work with ArcMap? – yes
  • How do I get started with it? See Project / Import / Map Scene / Import – creates an ArcGIS Pro project
  • What else is new in it? Lots of familiar and simplified things. If you can use ArcMap you can use ArcGIS Pro.
  • Demo – Labeling  – see preview of fonts when changed and everything is dynamic
  • Users will find things easier to do – for example, create more features using fewer clicks
