Woods Hole Oceanographer Dave Gallo to Deliver Keynote Address at 2016 International LiDAR Mapping Forum

December 17, 2015 By GISuser

Presentation will discuss Gallo’s expedition to map the RMS Titanic using multi-sensor seafloor mapping

International LiDAR Mapping Forum 2016 Program Announced

December 17, 2015 (Portland, Maine) – Dave Gallo, Oceanographer and Director of Special Projects at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will deliver the keynote “Beyond Titanic: The Pursuit of Tactical Oceanography” at International LiDAR Mapping Forum on Monday, February 22, 2016 in Denver. Dr. Gallo has been at the forefront of ocean exploration for over 25 years and was one of the first scientists to use a combination of robots and manned submersibles to map the ocean floor in great detail.

Most recently, Dr. Gallo co-led an expedition to create the first detailed and comprehensive map of the RMS Titanic. He has been described by TED Conferences as “an enthusiastic ambassador between the sea and those of us on dry land,” and his TED presentation “Underwater Astonishments” has attracted 12 million views, placing it among the top ten most-downloaded.

In his Keynote, Dr. Gallo will discuss the rapid growth in our ability to visualize the undersea world, the new sensors and platforms that have provided unparalleled information about the shape and texture of the seafloor and the waters above, and the challenges that still exist with navigation, power, multi-sensor fusion etc. His presentation will use RMS Titanic as an example of multi-sensor seafloor mapping and will address the recent advances in the ability to produce tactical oceanographic information.

“There is tremendous value in stepping outside our world to see mapping in a different light. Dave takes us on an entertaining and insightful journey into the ocean depths to reveal new approaches to mapping unknown worlds on our own planet,” said Lisa Murray, ILMF Show Director. “Often these ideas inspire new ways of thinking, whether a forest, a floodplain, or the ocean floor. LiDAR professionals will recognize similarities between Dave’s work and their own, while also getting to see some incredible discoveries and to share in new approaches for addressing the challenges of mapping beneath the sea.”

Other sessions will cover topics including:

  • Single photon, flash and Geiger-mode LiDAR
  • Linear LiDAR technology
  • Topo-Bathymetry
  • Data fusion & processing technologies
  • Pointclouds & automated feature extraction
  • Developments in data classification & GIS modeling
  • UAV/UAS
  • Forestry & vegetation monitoring
  • Game changing technologies on the horizon
