Viable Ideas for Furthering Your Education as a Developer

February 1, 2018 By GISuser

Working in the software industry can be very rewarding, but also very competitive. With more and more people wanting to join, and the increased availability of training materials and other tools for learning on one’s own time, it can be very difficult to stand out and get a foot in.

Landing a solid job is far from the end of that adventure though – you must also think of the future, and consider what you want to do with your career five or 10 years from now. This is where the importance of picking a viable master’s degree truly shines, as following the path of a developer further is not your only option.

Machine Learning

Machine learning is everywhere around us, and it’s only going to get more established in the future. There is speculation that regular software development jobs will be made obsolete by the advance of machine learning algorithms, and that’s a very real fear for some with a lot of experience under their belts.

The point is, if you insist on continuing to work on software directly as your future career path, that’s not necessarily a bad idea, but you have to be prepared for what’s coming. Getting some hands-on experience with machine learning and neural networks is a great idea if you want to future-proof your position in the market, and there are lots of opportunities to learn all about that on the Internet nowadays.

Project Management

If you feel like writing code might get boring after a while, don’t worry – you’re far from alone. Many people move up to a management position in those cases, and that can be a very lucrative career path if you have what it takes to see complex projects through without any flaws.

Pursuing a masters in project management from Brandeis University Online is one of the best things you can do for your career as a software developer nowadays, and it can allow you to put your skills to great use if you’ve already learned a lot about how the software works.

Just make sure that you do some research to find out if it’s the right choice for you – for example, Brandeis University offers a comprehensive guide about their relevant degrees, which can give you a good insight into the viability for this career path for you specifically.

Consultancy

Last but definitely not least, another great way to put your skills to good use without having to do a lot of heavy lifting yourself is to look into becoming a consultant. Many companies are constantly looking for someone to advise them on complex projects without taking on a leadership role, and these jobs can be highly rewarding in terms of bonuses and connections too.

On the flip side, it can get a little hectic switching employers on a regular basis, which is something you’re going to have to get used to if you want to make the most of a career as a consultant. As long as you can endure that though, it’s a very good path to consider.
