Harris Corporation Receives Prestigious Nunn-Perry Award from Department of Defense for Outstanding Mentor-Protégé Program

March 3, 2016 By GISuser

MELBOURNE, Fla.—Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) and its protégé, Spatial Data Integrations, Inc., have been awarded the prestigious Nunn-Perry Award by the Department of Defense (DoD). The award recognizes successful business mentor-protégé teams that excel in technical assistance, return on investments, and protégé development.

“The Mentor-Protégé program strengthens key suppliers who create innovative processes and technologies that benefit the DoD.”

Spatial Data Integrations is an African-American and woman-owned small business specializing in geospatial data conversion/collection, imagery analysis and database management. The Harris-Spatial Data Integrations Mentor-Protégé agreement was awarded under a geospatial content management contract with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA).

Technical assistance provided to Spatial Data Integrations included training that involved quality control principles, open source data collection, and geospatial content management. This technology training gives the NGA enhanced supplier quality and cost effectiveness in the collection and maintenance of GEOINT Data. North Carolina Central University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), also was part of the mentor-protégé team providing additional training support in geospatial technology and marketing research.

“The Nunn-Perry Award is highly valued in the DoD and small business communities, and is a significant honor for both Harris and Spatial Data Integrations,” said Bill Gattle, president, Harris Space and Intelligence Systems. “The Mentor-Protégé program strengthens key suppliers who create innovative processes and technologies that benefit the DoD.”

The Nunn-Perry Award, named in honor of former Senator Sam Nunn and former Secretary of Defense William Perry, was first awarded in 1995 to recognize outstanding Mentor-Protégé teams associated with the DoD.

The Mentor-Protégé program encourages large contractors, such as Harris, to share their technical expertise and knowledge of government contracting with innovative small businesses. The program’s major goal is to positively impact the growth of the defense industry base through partnerships between small, innovative technology companies and major defense industry contractors.
