Europa Technologies has deployed a unique coverage map service for the UK telecommunications regulator, Ofcom. The new map is designed to support consumers in choosing a service that best suits their needs, while promoting competition between mobile operators. Launched on 13 August 2015, the service received broad media coverage online and in major British newspapers.
The coverage map service was based on the acclaimed Network Insight Pro platform and uniquely features up-to-date mapping of all UK mobile network operators (MNOs) for voice and 3G/4G data services. Additionally, the service provides signal expectations for both indoor and outdoor environments. It is the first time that up-to-date coverage data from EE, O2, Three and Vodafone has been accessible from a single website. Ofcom is inviting users to check their coverage experience and leave feedback, which will help refine and improve the tool.
With mainstream media coverage, the service was immediately popular and received over 100,000 visits within the first 24 hours. The service was dynamically scaled to meet the unprecedented demand.
In a press release, Steve Unger, Ofcom’s Chief Technology Officer said: “Access to reliable mobile phone coverage used to be a ‘nice to have’. Now it’s essential to many people’s lives. We believe our map is the most comprehensive tool available to consumers and businesses to check mobile coverage. We’re encouraging people to feed back after using the map, so we can continue to improve its accuracy.”
