Hello GISuser… Welcome once again as we have another fine Geo-Tech update for you. Kicking things off, there’s a fair bit of buzz this week out of D.C as the ESRI FEDUC kicks off. Always of interest, be sure to follow the #feduc hashtag on Twitter to hear directly from attendees, the ESRI team and others. This is a great way to stay informed of some interesting tidbits like this one from @bernszukalski (ESRI) #FedUC Just tested beta ArcGIS Explorer Online on Mac OS X 10.6 – a new platform for GIS? For those of you near the Capital, take note of this interesting event this week-end in Maryland "GPS Adventures, Family geocaching" taking place at the Maryland Science Center"
A number of interesting newsmakers recently (headlines below) including: an interesting geocaching EDU event taking place in Baltimore; ESRI partnering up with Amazon to deliver GIS in the Cloud; Bentley’s New 3D City GIS Information Modeling Software to Enhance Design and Operation of Intelligent Cities; and New Century Software Inc. and LandWorks Inc., developers of asset management software for the oil & gas pipeline industry, have agreed to integrate their respective software solutions – the New Century Software Facility Manager and LandWorks Property Management (LPM). Over on the blog (blog.gisuser.com) we’ve shared a few interesting goodies since Tuesday including the following: Indeed the topic of location services and privacy is a huge one. It seems that over the years whenever LBS technology makes advances into the consumer space the topic of privacy and security creeps up – and for good reason. It seems that in the Capital this topic is gaining traction as well as I’ve heard that The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection and the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet will hold a joint hearing Feb. 24 on "The Collection and Use of Location Information for Commercial Purposes" – we’re pleased to have provided the committee with a little feedback on this topic! On a related matter, just yesterday I was told about an interesting web service that scrapes data from people checking into Twitter via foursquare and them posts details on a site called, of all things "please rob me" – the site’s goal is to inform users of location services about privacy concerns! Finally, speaking of Google, let me leave you with a tip… is your Business Listed with Google?
