NAVTEQ First to Launch 2010 US Tiger Census Information

August 15, 2011 By Editor

2010 Tiger Census features are now available for NAVTEQ’s US and Puerto Rico Census Boundaries and Census ID products

CHICAGO, Aug. 15, 2011 — NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world, announced that users of geographic information systems (GIS) and geo-marketers have access to new tools to support their efforts. This new content is available now, having been integrated in NAVTEQ’s Census Boundaries and Census ID products for the US and Puerto Rico as of the Q1 2011 database release.

These products contain multiple layers providing more options for slicing data when conducting GIS and business analysis. Among the layers in NAVTEQ’s U.S. Census Boundary product is Census Block, the most granular administrative unit at the federal level.  In this layer census blocks can be bounded on all sides by visible features that in densely populated settings occupy only a small area, but may cover several square miles of territory in sparsely populated rural areas.  In addition to the Census Block feature, Census Boundaries contains Census Block Groups and Census Tracts.

Additional geography layers that are matched to the highly accurate NAVTEQ® map at the street centerline include a new Congressional district layer as well as:

  • State boundaries
  • County boundaries
  • Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)
  • Core Based Statistical Area (CBSA)
  • Minor Civil Division (MCD)

"As technology evolves, NAVTEQ is helping to drive more sophisticated GIS and geo-marketing analytics," stated Scott Scheuber, director North America map and content products for NAVTEQ.  "Our census boundary products are critical to supporting these advances by enabling our customers to derive richer and more precise insights from geo-data."

Census Boundaries are available for the United States, Canada, Mexico, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.  The Census IDs product, a correspondence file between Census Boundaries and the NAVTEQ map enables additional geo-coding detail and is available for the United States, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The Q3 2011 database release will also include the new Census 2010 information for the US Virgin Islands.
