The Ultimate Handbook for OpenVMS Application Developers

November 5, 2011 By Editor

The Minimum You Need to Know: to Be an OpenVMS Application Developer by Roland Hughes is the first book in Logikal Solutions’ “Minimum You Need to Know” series. In this volume, Hughes helps developers who know one of the covered languages on another platform make the transition to the OpenVMS platform, as well as aiding OpenVMS developers who are having to work with a language other than their own to catch up on “the minimum you need to know.”

Among the topics covered are: fundamentals of OpenVMS, DCL and utilities, DEC BASIC, FMS, CMS (Code Management System), CDD (Common Data Dictionary), object and text libraries, MMS (Module Management System – make), message utility, FORTRAN, COBOL, C/C++, MySQL, and RDB. Hughes breaks each topic down into digestible segments, helping you to understand everything you need to know to be proficient in each of these areas.

While the majority of the book is technical in nature, Hughes offers “Ruminations and Observations,” addressing the fact that over the years, IT workers “have lost sight of our obligations to the industry and the world in general,” focusing instead on “creating things which are impressive, either to them or to the general public” and “At some point a conscience needs to return to the industry.”

Hughes’ book is the perfect guide for anyone who is currently successful at writing applications on lesser platforms such as Windows and UNIX, catching them up to speed in order to utilize the more robust and stable platform of OpenVMS quickly and efficiently. As the title might suggest, the guide is written in such a way that it is accessible to anyone who has a basic knowledge of application writing, aimed at giving one “more than enough knowledge and skills to become a maintenance programmer at many shops running OpenVMS.” The Minimum You Need to Know: to Be an OpenVMS Application Developer will inevitably become a treasured part of any IT worker’s library, indeed, the go-to source for OpenVMS application developing.
