Mapquest is boasting some of their numbers from 2011 via an interesting infographic.
The visual summary (aka. Eye-Candy) looks at how the community used Mapquest during the year and reveals some interesting trends and figures. I’m always a fan of infographics, mainly as we can glean a ton of information from one visually appealing page of information – contrast this to a typical 40 page+ PDF that you’d get from the Census Bureau showing off data that they collected from the recent Census!
According to the company, MapQuest helped to route more than 332 billion miles in the last six months of 2011, the equivalent of over 700,000 round trips to the moon or 1/20th of a light year. The company helps people research and discover: where is it, how to get there and what’s nearby; it is the 4th most popular mobile travel brand.
So, what are people doing with Mapquest? According to the infographic, Mapquest boasts the following numbers:
- In 6 months users were routed over 332,000,000 miles
- Women prefer Mapquest with a user base of 53.6% being female although men seem to return more often as repeat users
- What are people searching for? Seems that airports, tourist attractions and sports venues are popular search items
- More than 260 million printer friendly directions generated (this implies that millions search and print their results), printed out this would be a paper trail more than 45,000 miles long!
- Mapquest Mobile app (iOS, Android, Mobile Web) was downloaded 7.1+ million times in 2011
- 23.4% of all mobile map users have used Mapquest
- Mapquest is the 16th most popular overall brand and 2nd most popular maps and directions brand
Recall it was late in 2011 when Mapquest released mqVibe to enhance local search offerings and provide a more social experience to users. From Mapquest… MapQuest’s community of more than 39 million unique visitors each month* creates a large user base for this new, social-algorithmic platform. Leveraging 10 years of MapQuest search logs, mqVibe provides a unique neighborhood perspective through rankings of restaurants, shopping, services and cultural attractions, among other significant insights.
