FORT MYERS, FL—APRIL 4, 2012—Interop Technologies, a provider of core wireless solutions for advanced messaging, mobile device provisioning and management, and connectivity gateways, today announced that Open Mobile, a leading mobile operator in Puerto Rico, has successfully delivered Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) test messages to wireless devices during a tsunami warning and advisory simulation conducted in Puerto Rico last week. The exercise, which simulated a widespread tsunami warning throughout the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, forwarded the text-based alerts using Interop’s hosted Commercial Mobile Service Provider (CMSP) Gateway.
When the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) implements CMAS throughout the United States and its territories on April 7, Open Mobile will forward CMAS alert messages from federal, state, and local alerting agencies to CMAS-enabled mobile devices. The Presidential, Imminent Threat, and AMBER alerts will help to decrease response times and save lives and property when emergencies occur. The National Weather Service and National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program worked with FEMA to include CMAS among the public alerting tools tested in this year’s tsunami warning exercise, known as LANTEX 12. Open Mobile was the only Puerto Rican operator prepared to deliver the CMAS test alerts during this simulation.
In the drill, Interop Technologies’ CMSP Gateway successfully forwarded the test messages initiated by the National Weather Service to a set of test handsets in Puerto Rico. In an actual emergency, CMAS alerts will be forwarded to all CMAS-enabled handsets in the Open Mobile service area.
"By selecting Interop’s hosted CMSP Gateway, we were able to prepare for CMAS well ahead of FEMA’s April rollout date,” said Federico Grosso, Chief Operating Officer, Open Mobile. “Our ability to successfully deliver CMAS test alerts during last week’s tsunami drill gives us confidence in our readiness to provide these life-saving alerts to our subscribers.”
“We are proud that Open Mobile was the only operator prepared to participate in the recent simulation and are happy to assist in its efforts to enhance the safety and security of its subscribers throughout Puerto Rico," said Tony Mijares, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Distribution, Interop Technologies.
