Cartography Book from PetersonGIS – Cartographer’s Toolkit: Colors, Typography, Patterns

July 25, 2012 By Editor

Fort Collins, Colorado—July 24, 2012—Cartographer’s Toolkit: Colors, Typography, Patterns, newly published by PetersonGIS, is like a big cheat-sheet for cartography. Its three chapters—Colors, Typography, and Composition Patterns—build from individual map components to cohesive cartographic constructions. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction explaining relevant theory, key definitions, and usage suggestions. The pages that follow each introduction provide an abundance of visual demonstrations that are the basis for the tools in the toolkit.

The book contains:

·       30 color palettes in 3 categories: coordinated palettes, color ramps, and differentiated

·       50 typefaces showcased in 3 categories: standard, free, and for-fee

·       28 composition patterns illustrated with 36 maps by many of today’s leading cartographers

“Cartographer’s Toolkit is an excellent new book,” says Allen Carroll, former Chief Cartographer at National Geographic and current Program Manager, Esri. It focuses on real-world solutions rather than cartographic theory, and is full of ideas that will inspire new approaches and creative solutions for cartographers. I love the book’s clean, accessible, no-nonsense approach.”

The book is written by Gretchen N. Peterson, a GISuser Expert Contributor, owner of the geospatial analysis firm PetersonGIS, and practicing cartographer. For more information about the book, listen to Peterson’s book talk on A VerySpatial Podcast.

Cartographer’s Toolkit: Colors, Typography, Patterns (ISBN: 978-0615467948, 184 pages, US$49.95) is available at online retailers worldwide, or directly through the publisher by emailing info@petersongis.com. Retailers can find the book listed with Ingram.
