OceanWise Improves Marine Themes and Signs Up New Distributors

March 26, 2013 By Editor

Independent marine data management and publishing specialist, OceanWise Ltd, has addressed the challenge of combining the fragmented features present in nautical charting and existing chart derived products.  Customers that have migrated to OceanWise’s innovative Marine Themes dataset will now see even bigger benefits, as the irregular coverage and multi scale levels of traditional charting have been overcome.

OceanWise’s MD, Dr Mike Osborne, explains, “Don’t be fooled by a recent trend of old products using outmoded techniques being given new names.  OceanWise has invested real time and expertise over the last 3 years to create a far superior dataset.”  In comparative tests, users are impressed by the simplicity and cleanliness of Marine Themes, compared with complexity and fragmented geometry that results from ‘cookie cutting’ multiple charts.  If that isn’t enough, the new technique retains the features that are often totally removed by blanket cookie cutting and provides an audit trail to source data unique identifiers (S-57 FOIDs), providing quicker and more reliable updates.  The OceanWise Team should know, they pioneered the use of nautical charting in GIS in the late 1990’s, created the original “best available” method back in 2005, and have now created the new, more advanced one!

When combined with Marine Themes Elevation Layers, which are also edge matched, or OceanWise’s Marine Themes Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Marine Themes is the most advanced marine dataset available for use in Desktop and Web GIS.  Marine Themes is available direct from OceanWise for all UK Public Sector customers and from a range of distributors, who add third party datasets and other value, such as Web Services.  To serve customers in its growing European markets, OceanWise has signed up two new distributors – Geomod and Digimap – who are already making significant progress.  To compliment Marine Themes, new Web Services (WMS and WFS) using raster and vector nautical charting are also in development.
