Environmental Remediation Made Easier With Juniper Systems’ Mesa® Rugged Notepad

July 16, 2014 By Editor

Logan, UT — W&M Environmental Group (W&M) has been using Juniper Systems’ Mesa® Rugged Notepad to provide environmental remediation services, particularly environmental injection. W&M provides these services to a variety of industries, including Real Estate Due Diligence, Industrial Environmental Health & Safety, Natural Resources, and Industrial Hygiene/Safety.

Environmental injection is a type of environmental remediation in which minimally-invasive chemicals are injected below ground to treat contamination. The injectant may consist of synthetic chemicals developed for specific contaminants, or it may even be a food source, such as molasses or cheese whey, for naturally-occurring microbes. This service requires that a large amount of data be collected, including the horizontal location of the injection, depth, volume, pressures delivered, specific conditions, and activity reports. W&M uses the Mesa to painlessly collect and export all of this data.

In the past, W&M tediously recorded all of the required data using pen and paper. The hard copies would then be scanned, saved on a file server, and then re-entered into a spreadsheet. The process was time-consuming and introduced many opportunities for error.

Now, W&M uses the Mesa along with a custom field data collection solution they developed that logs all of the necessary data at the time the injectant is delivered. The data is then synced to a central enterprise database, where it can be used for production of site maps and analysis, custom reports, and most importantly, rapid situational awareness and decision-making.

“Providing our field teams with a method of logging the necessary data while providing a method to collect that data for analysis and reporting is central to our vision,” says Doug Ruppel, Director of Technology for W&M. “Preserving that data for use by the project team in a way that allows us to make quick operational decisions truly changes the game in a very positive way for environmental professionals.”

The Mesa Rugged Notepad is an ideal handheld for working in rough environments, as it is rated IP67 for dust and water, designed to MIL-STD-810G standards, and it features a large, 5.7-inch sunlight-readable display. The Mesa is also available in a Class I, Div 2 model for hazardous locations.
