Research Shows Cities are safer than the Burbs

July 23, 2013 By Editor

If you were to check my College transcripts then you’d likely consider me to be an urban geographer… I guess that’s why I’ve always been fascinated with the makeup of cities and the complex, interactions between people and place.  Having lived through many years of people flocking to the suburbs, and now populations headed back to the vibrant city centers it’s interesting to see research findings that seem to reveal that cities are indeed much safer than the burbs!

Some interesting findings in research from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)… Analyzing 1,295,919 injury deaths that occurred between 1999 and 2006, researchers determined that the risk of injury death was 22 percent higher in the most rural counties than in the most urban. The most common causes of injury death were motor vehicle crashes, leading to 27.61 deaths per 100,000 people in most rural areas and 10.58 per 100,000 in most urban areas.
