How to Open and Convert HEIC Files on Android

June 11, 2026 By GISuser

Someone sent you a photo from their iPhone. Your Android phone shows a blank thumbnail or refuses to open the file entirely. The extension says HEIC and your gallery app has no idea what it is.

This isn’t your phone’s fault. HEIC is Apple’s default photo format. Android wasn’t built to handle it natively — at least not on older versions. The problem hits millions of Android users daily. Photos arrive that simply won’t open.

Here’s everything you need to know about opening and converting HEIC files on Android, without installing anything you don’t need.

Why Android Can’t Open HEIC Files

Apple launched HEIC with iOS 11 in 2017. Built for iPhones, it fits Apple’s world perfectly. Android runs on completely different standards.

Android 12 brought native HEIC support. Running 12 or later? Your gallery opens HEIC files straight away. No extra steps.

On Android 11 or older, HEIC files show up as blank thumbnails or throw an error. The OS just doesn’t know what to do with them.

First thing — check your Android version. Settings, About Phone, Android Version. That one number tells you which route to take.

Method 1 — Check Your Android Version First

Devices running Android 12 or higher can read HEIC files without any extra software. No apps needed. No workarounds required.

On Android 12 with a HEIC file that still won’t open, the app is probably the issue, not Android itself. Try opening it through Google Photos instead. It handles HEIC on most versions, even some older ones.

Android 11 or below, native support isn’t there. Pick one of the methods below.

Method 2 — Google Photos

On older Android versions, Google Photos tends to handle HEIC better than anything else. It handles HEIC better than most built-in gallery apps, even below Android 12.

Step 1: Grab Google Photos from the Play Store if it’s not already there.

Step 2: Open the HEIC file directly through Google Photos.

Step 3: Photo open? Tap the three-dot menu. Hit Save to Device. Google Photos saves a JPG version straight to your phone.

Works on Android 8 and above. For the odd HEIC file here and there, this is the quickest fix without touching a browser.

Best for: Android users who get HEIC files every now and then and want a fast fix with nothing to install.

Method 3 — Online Converter via Browser

The most reliable method for any Android version. Works on Android 7 and above. No app installation required.

Step 1: Step 1: Open up Chrome on your Android device.

Step 2: Go to the free HEIC to JPG converter from WPS—a reliable heic converter that works straight from Chrome.

Step 3: Tap Upload HEIC. Select the file from your downloads or file manager.

Step 4: Tap Convert. Download the JPG when it’s ready.

The converted JPG saves directly to your Downloads folder. Open it in any gallery app without any compatibility issues.

WPS keeps your original resolution, handles color profiles correctly, and preserves EXIF metadata. The JPG you get back matches the original exactly.

For multiple HEIC files, select them all at once and download everything as a single ZIP file.

Best for: Any Android version. Most reliable output quality. No installation required.

Method 4 — File Manager Apps

Some Android file managers read HEIC natively, even on older versions. Worth trying before pulling up a converter.

Solid Explorer, FX File Explorer, and the default managers on Samsung and Xiaomi devices are worth trying. Recent software versions of those tend to handle HEIC fine.

Step 1: Pull up your file manager.

Step 2: Find the folder with the HEIC file.

Step 3: Tap the file. Supported? It opens right up.

Opening it is one thing. Saving as JPG is another. Most file managers can view HEIC but won’t convert it. For that, the online converter is still your best move.

Best for: Checking whether your device can view HEIC before committing to a conversion.

Method 5 — Ask the iPhone User to Change Their Settings

The most permanent fix doesn’t involve your Android phone at all.

One message to the iPhone user fixes this permanently. Tell them to go to Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible. Every photo they shoot after that comes out as JPG. You get JPG files from that point on. Nobody has to convert anything.

There’s also a transfer setting—Settings, Camera, Transfer to Mac or PC, set to Automatic. That one helps when moving files to a computer. It won’t change what gets shared directly to your Android, though.

Camera format change is the one that sticks. One tap on their phone. Done.

Best for: Anyone who regularly receives photos from the same iPhone user.

Which Method Should You Use?

On Android 12 or above, try opening the file directly first. Most files open without any workaround.

On Android 11 or below, the online converter is the go-to. No installation. Works on every version. Best output quality. Open Chrome, upload the file, and download the JPG. Under a minute.

Already have Google Photos? The occasional HEIC file opens cleanly in Google Photos even on older Android versions.

Want it sorted for good? One message to the iPhone user. Camera format to Most Compatible. No more HEIC files from that point.

No technical knowledge needed. Anyone looking to convert HIEC to JPG on Android can do it through the WPS converter in under a minute.

Why HEIC Files End Up on Android in the First Place

iPhone users don’t choose HEIC. Apple made HEIC the default back in iOS 11. Most iPhone users have no idea their photos are saving that way — until someone on Android or Windows tells them nothing will open.

Inside Apple’s world, HEIC makes total sense. Smaller files, same sharpness. Step outside that world and everyone on the receiving end runs into the same wall.

Worth keeping in mind—the iPhone user isn’t doing this on purpose. They probably have no idea. A quick message about the camera settings usually clears it up for good.

FAQ

Why can’t my Android phone open HEIC files?

Android 12 added native HEIC support. Older versions never had it — the format wasn’t part of Android’s original standards. On anything below 12, Google Photos or an online converter gets the job done.

What is the easiest way to convert HEIC to JPG on Android?

Open Chrome. Go to an online heic converter. Upload the file as heic to jpeg or heic to JPG—both work the same way.

Does Android 12 support HEIC files natively?

Yes. Android 12 and above handles HEIC natively in the gallery and Google Photos. File still won’t open on 12? Try Google Photos specifically instead of your default gallery app.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files to JPG on Android at once?

Yes. Pick an online converter with batch upload support. Select all your HEIC files, upload them together, and download one ZIP with all the JPGs. No computer needed.

How do I stop receiving HEIC files on Android?

Tell the iPhone user to go to Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible. Every photo after that comes out as JPG. No more conversions. No more compatibility issues.
