Dmitry Volkov’s Biography: From Social Discovery to AI Investing and Philosophy

The business of Dmitry Volkov, an entrepreneur, grew out of a much longer career. Volkov entered online business in the late 1990s, when internet companies were still using the economics of bringing people together online. What followed was not a single-company career. His portfolio includes internet businesses, venture investing, and advisory work.

That makes the Dmitry Borisovich Volkov biography somewhat unusual among technology founders. His career later expanded beyond technology into venture investing and academic philosophy.

Dmitry Volkov’s Early Business Years

The late 1990s marked the beginning of  Volkov’s work in consumer internet businesses. In 1998, he co-founded the company that would later become Social Discovery Group, entering the market while online communication was still taking shape.

Dmitry Volkov’s early business references belong to this earlier part of his business history and should not be treated as another name for Social Discovery Group. The latter developed into a separate global social discovery business, with a portfolio spanning dozens of brands and products built around online communication.

By the time Social Discovery Group reached users in 100 countries, Volkov had spent years working with products designed for international audiences. That period gave him direct experience with cross-border tech expansion and scaling global digital platforms, experience that later carried into his investment work.

The next stage lasted much longer than the founding story suggests. Volkov remained involved as the business moved beyond its original internet products and developed an international audience. Social Discovery Group eventually brought together a wider range of social discovery brands, while the underlying work became increasingly global: different markets, different audiences, and products that had to work across borders rather than within one domestic market.

Looking back, several ideas connect projects that otherwise seem very different:

  • building products for international rather than single-country audiences;
  • scaling global digital platforms around communication;
  • working with venture firms and technology founders;
  • investing across different stages and categories rather than concentrating on one company;
  • moving into AI as conversational technology became a larger part of online social interaction.

Split Between Business and Philosophy

Business occupied only one side of Volkov’s professional life. His philosophy work eventually resulted in a Ph.D. and two published books.

Volkov later became an The International Center for Consciousness Studies (ICCS)  co-founder, an organization created to bring philosophical research into conversation with other disciplines. He also studied at Harvard Business School and UC Berkeley.

The timing matters because these interests now meet in AI. Questions Volkov had approached through philosophy: what consciousness is, what makes an agent intelligent, and where human experience begins – became practical questions for an industry building increasingly sophisticated conversational systems.

The two tracks have continued for years rather than appearing as separate phases of his career. By this point, the work of Dmitry Volkov, an entrepreneur, had moved beyond running one technology company. He was spending more time with founders, venture firms, and businesses at different stages of development.

From Operating Companies to AI Investing

Eventually, Volkov’s role changed. He stepped away from the Social Discovery Group CEO position and put more of his time into investing, board work, and advising technology companies. His disclosed technology investments have included companies such as LinguaLeo, StreetLife, and Academia.edu.

AI became a more visible part of that work as conversational technology moved closer to the social products he already knew. Current profiles describe Dmitry Volkov entrepreneur as both an AI investor and technology founder. His involvement is not limited to putting capital into the sector: it includes company building, advisory work, and evaluating how machine intelligence can change online communication. It is a continuation of the serial entrepreneurship that has run through much of his technology career.

That overlap with his earlier work is fairly direct. Social Discovery Group spent years building products around conversations between people; generative AI introduced the possibility of conversations in which one side might not be human at all. Volkov’s public writing has since returned repeatedly to questions around AI, digital intimacy, and the changing relationship between human and machine interaction.

Where Those Threads Meet

More than two decades separate Volkov’s first internet business from his current work with AI companies. During that time, his role changed several times: founder, CEO, investor, board member, and adviser. Philosophy remained alongside those shifts rather than replacing one of them.

That makes the present stage easier to understand. Social Discovery Group continues under its own management, while Volkov’s attention is spread across investments, AI, and research into questions he was studying long before generative AI became a mainstream technology. What once looked like separate parts of his career now increasingly occupy the same territory.
