5 features to look for in a Warehouse Management Solution

October 14, 2026 By GISuser

A reliable warehouse management solution would have all the necessary capabilities for tracking the inventory, optimizing the staff workflows, and speeding up the fulfillment.

A good 3PL WMS software offers complete insights, enabling you to make informed decisions whenever expanding and growing the business. There are many different options on the market, and the process of choosing the right type of warehouse management system for your business can be daunting and problematic. If you are a business that is struggling to manage the inventory in your warehouse then you can look into implementing a warehouse management software such as WareGo.

In this blog, we will share the mandatory features that should be present in a warehouse management solution:

Mandatory features for Warehouse Management Software

Here are the necessary features that should be included in a warehouse management solution:

  1. Inventory Management:

A well-designed system should offer real-time tracking of the inventory levels, statuses, and location within the warehouse. Whereas, the instant movement of the inventory should be logged to offer traceability and insights that actually starts within the warehouse, encompassing all the movements within the warehouse and ends with good outs.

The key features include, real-time inventory level and statuses, support for the stock keeping suits, and attribute logging for the serial and batch along with date information. The barcode scanning for maintaining stock accuracy, and inventory allocation for instant orders, and warehouse tasks like FIFO and FEFO.

  1. Warehouse Location Management

The second feature that should be there within the warehouse management system is, allowing admins to get the ability for identification of the warehouse layout and classify the space within the warehouse efficiently. Depending on the different warehouses and internal warehouse zones, the use cases include pick faces, bulk storage, and other goods or out-of-location storage, with highly controlled storage like frozen items or high-security games.

Perhaps, the core bullets include allocation of unique IDs for each of the locations, taking into account the column, along with self-placement. Support for the locations across multiple warehouses and warehouse zones. Whereas barcode scanning of the locations for inventory control and traceability, and location types like bulk or pick. Moreover, warehouse mapping allows visibility of the locations and contents at a high level, with access control for maintaining security and health, along with loss control.

  1. Goods in the Processes

Managing the goods efficiently within the warehouse can be the biggest challenge for the warehouse admins and the managers. The core solution would be to allow management of the goods within the store. The solution would offer great visibility of all the upcoming deliveries that include, deliveries date, and efficient handling. Whereas a staged receipt should have been supported to allow the managers to let the shipments be received for subsequent put-away and minimize mismanagement with efficient barcodes.

Therefore, the core features include offering support for advanced shipment and push notifications, a delivery calendar to show upcoming shipments to the customers, serial shipping container codes, and staged receipt with instant put-aways.

  1. Order Management in the WMS

A modernized warehouse management solution would allow you to deal with all kinds of orders input from different sources, like an Omni-channel system that keeps the receipts of the orders from one place to another. Whereas, considering this, a warehouse management solution would allow you to automate the order deliveries for accuracy and speed of operations and tracking from one receipt to the delivery location.:

The order management solution in the warehouse should include features like:

  • Central point for management of the orders in bulk
  • Ability to receive orders and offer inventory and dispatch updates across different channels.
  • Barcode scanning and management of the products
  • Order statuses for allowing instant automation and driving warehouse action
  • Query and response tracking
  • Order tracking
  • Automation rules for the common actions and reporting along with analytics.
  1. Shipping Management in the WMS

A warehouse management solution should be able to automate the aspects of the warehouse’s shipping processes. Automated courier and service selection that comprises order and package detailing, destination and generate the required documentations. It allows you to automate the processes in bulk and create the shipping labels along with return on tracking information.

The key elements include:

  • Automated service automation and selection
  • Document production
  • Integration and shipping label generation
  • Automated receipt of the tracking information
  • Reporting and complete holistic analytics.

Wrapping Up

And we are done for the day. We hope that you enjoyed reading about the amazing features that should be present within the warehouse management software, and how these features are adding into the versatile functionalities and overall performance maintenance. If you think we have missed anything within the blog then feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. We would love to hear it back from you.
