The Hundred Year Old Railway Behind the Shiping Narrow Gauge Train

When people book a ride on the Shiping Narrow Gauge Train, most of them are thinking about the mountains, lakes, and old towns they will see through the window. Very few people realize that the tracks under the wheels have a story that goes back more than a hundred years, long before the train itself was ever built. This is not just a scenic railway. It is a piece of living history, and knowing that story makes the ride feel completely different.

What Railway Is This, Really

The Shiping Narrow Gauge Train runs on part of the old Yunnan to Vietnam Railway, also known as the Kunming to Hekou Railway in its Chinese section. This line was built between 1903 and 1910, connecting Kunming in southwest China to Haiphong, a port city in Vietnam. The full railway stretches over 800 kilometers, with more than 460 kilometers of it running through the mountains of Yunnan province.

This railway is special for one simple reason. It was built using a narrow track width called meter gauge, which measures exactly one meter between the two rails. Most Chinese railways use a wider standard gauge. The Yunnan to Vietnam line remains the only meter gauge main line still running in mainland China, which makes it one of a kind.

Why the Railway Was Built

The railway was built by French engineers during a time when France controlled Vietnam as a colony and was expanding its trade influence into southern China. France wanted a way to move goods between its colony and Yunnan province, which was rich in tin, copper, and other minerals. A rail line meant French companies could move heavy cargo in and out of the region far faster than any road at the time allowed.

Building the railway also gave France more influence in the region during a period when several foreign powers were competing for access to China. France had already gained ground in northern Vietnam after a war with China in the 1880s, and the railway was the next step in turning that influence into a working trade route deep into Yunnan. The economic goal was clear. The human cost of reaching that goal, however, turned out to be much higher than anyone expected.

The Engineering Challenge in Numbers

The full railway runs about 855 kilometers from Kunming to Haiphong. The Chinese section alone, from Kunming to the border town of Hekou, covers roughly 466 kilometers, while the remaining stretch continues on through northern Vietnam. Building it cost around 95 million French francs at the time, a huge sum for a single rail project in that era. To manage the workload, French companies brought in more than 3,000 engineers from France, the United States, Britain, Italy, and Canada, alongside the tens of thousands of local laborers doing the heaviest and most dangerous work by hand.

For decades after it opened, the line ran almost entirely on steam locomotives, which were slow and required constant maintenance in such mountainous terrain. Diesel engines did not fully take over until the 1980s, meaning steam trains worked this route for most of the twentieth century.

A Difficult and Costly Build

Yunnan’s landscape is full of steep mountains, deep river valleys, and thick forest, which made construction extremely hard. French companies recruited more than 60,000 Chinese laborers, along with thousands of foreign engineers from France, Italy, Britain, and other countries, to complete the project.

The work was dangerous. Many laborers died from disease, accidents, and the sheer difficulty of building bridges and tunnels through mountain terrain with the basic tools available at the time. One famous section, a steel bridge now known as Renziqiao, is believed to have cost the lives of around 800 workers during its construction, roughly one life for every meter of bridge built. It remains one of the most difficult and deadly railway projects ever completed in China.

Despite the human cost, the finished railway was seen as a true engineering achievement. When it opened in 1910, a British newspaper called it one of the three great engineering wonders of the world, placing it alongside the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal. Considering the tools and technology available at the time, cutting a working railway through this kind of terrain really was a remarkable achievement.

What Happened to the Railway Over Time

After it opened, the railway became an important trade route between China and Vietnam for several decades. During the Second World War, it played a role in supply movements before parts of the track were removed to slow down potential attacks. After the war ended, the Chinese government eventually rebuilt and reopened the line.

Once the People’s Republic of China was formed in 1949, the railway came under full Chinese ownership and control. It continued running as a freight line for many years, carrying goods between Yunnan and the Vietnamese border, and it still handles freight traffic on parts of the route today.

The Railway Today

In recent years, the old railway has become something else entirely. Travelers, photographers, and history lovers have started visiting the towns and stations along the line simply to see what remains of this era. One of the best known stops is Bisezhai, a station built by the French more than a century ago. Its mustard yellow buildings and old European style architecture still stand today, giving visitors a rare look at what railway travel looked like when the line was brand new.

Sections of the old track, along with old bridges and tunnels, have become tourist attractions in their own right. People travel from other parts of China specifically to see these remains and imagine what it must have felt like to build and ride this railway when it was new.

Riding a Piece of History Today

This is the same historic corridor that the Shiping Narrow Gauge Train now travels. Instead of standard rail cars, this route uses a smaller, narrower orange train built to match the character of the original meter gauge line. The train moves at a relaxed pace through lakes, mountains, and old towns with deep cultural roots, including areas close to the ancient city of Jianshui.

Riding this train is not just about the view outside the window, although the scenery is beautiful on its own. It is about traveling on rails that were laid by hand more than a hundred years ago, through mountains that were once considered nearly impossible to cross. Few railways anywhere in the world can offer that kind of direct connection to history while still being a comfortable, enjoyable journey today.

For travelers who enjoy history as much as scenery, the Shiping Narrow Gauge Train offers something rare. It is not simply a train ride through nice countryside. It is a chance to travel the same path once described as one of the great engineering wonders of the world, built by tens of thousands of workers whose effort quite literally shaped the ground beneath the tracks. Understanding that history turns a pleasant train ride into something far more meaningful.

Before you board, it is worth taking a moment to look at old photos of the railway during its construction, or reading about stations like Bisezhai. Seeing what the line looked like when steam engines first rolled through these mountains makes the modern journey feel less like a simple sightseeing trip and more like stepping into a story that started well over a century ago and is still being written today, one journey at a time.
