How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Men Based on Skin Type

September 10, 2026 By GISuser

Most men know that sunscreen helps protect skin from tanning and sun damage, but many may stop using it after a few days because it feels greasy, leaves a white cast, or makes the skin look oily. But most of the time, the sunscreen itself may not be the problem; it may be the formula that doesn’t suit your skin type. Choosing the right texture and ingredients for your skin can make sun protection feel lighter, more comfortable, and easier to wear every day. Once you know what your skin needs, sticking to sun protection becomes much simpler.

Why Skin Type Matters When Choosing the Right Sunscreen?

Your skin type plays an important role in how a sunscreen feels, looks, as well as how it performs throughout the day. A formula that works well for oily skin may not be as comfortable for dry skin, and sensitive or combination skin may have different needs altogether.

For example, oily skin types may prefer lightweight or gel-based formulas that are non-greasy to help reduce shine, while dry skin types require a more moisturising sunscreen to help prevent tightness and dryness. If you have sensitive skin, you might want a gentler formula with fewer possible irritants.

Thus, if you’re looking for the best sunscreen for men in India, look for a sunscreen that suits your skin type, is more likely to blend well, and has a formula that stays comfortable through the day. This is also one that is far more likely to become part of your everyday routine.

Identify Your Skin Type

The best way to know what sunscreens to choose is to understand how your skin behaves when it is not wearing anything. A quick home test will give you a good idea of your skin type and help you avoid formulas that feel too greasy, too heavy or not moisturising enough.

Here’s how to do it:

Wash your face, wait 30 minutes and don’t use any moisturiser/serum/sunscreen. Press a tissue/blotting paper on your forehead, nose, and cheeks

  • Oily: Tissue picks up shine across all areas and looks oily, especially around the T-zone.
  • Dry: No oil on the tissue and skin feels tight, especially around the cheeks or beard area.
  • Combination: Oily T-zone, normal/dry cheeks
  • Sensitive: Skin gets red or reacts quickly to new products (important for men who shave: post-shave sensitivity is a good indicator)

Knowing these details makes it much easier to find the right sunscreen for men that feels comfortable from morning to evening.

Best Sunscreen Formulas for Each Skin Type

Next, it’s important to choose the sunscreen with the right texture. The formula can make the difference between a product you enjoy using every day and one that sits untouched on the shelf.

Oily or Combination Skin

Look for gel-based or fluid sunscreens that say oil-free and non-comedogenic. Many dermatologists recommend ingredients such as Niacinamide, Silica, Zinc PCA, Cica & Seaweed Extracts as they absorb quickly, control excess oil and feel lighter on the skin without clogging pores. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, or commute in humid weather, a matte finish is especially helpful.

Dry Skin

Cream-based sunscreens work better for dry skin that loses moisture easily. Ingredients like Hyaluronic acid, Ceramides, or Glycerin can help keep the skin comfortable while protecting it from UV exposure. A well-formulated cream can leave the skin looking soft and less prone to flakes.

Sensitive Skin

If you have reactive skin after shaving or to strong fragrances, choose a fragrance-free mineral sunscreen with ingredients such as Zinc oxide or Titanium dioxide. These sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays and usually cause less irritation.

Particularly for Indian weather, the right sunscreen for men is usually one that offers broad-spectrum protection and has a lightweight, sweat-resistant formula. This makes the sunscreen comfortable to wear on hot afternoons, outdoor work or your daily commute.

Understanding SPF and PA Rating

The labels on sunscreen can be confusing, but the two most important things to look for are the SPF and PA ratings. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn.  SPF 30 may be sufficient for most people for daily use, but SPF 50 provides extra protection, especially in humid weather and when you will be spending more time outdoors.

The PA rating indicates how well the sunscreen protects from UVA rays, which are responsible for tanning, pigmentation and premature ageing of the skin. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen, like PA+++ or PA++++, which means the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Sunscreen Application Tips for Men

Even the best sunscreen will not deliver its full protection if it is applied incorrectly. Here are a few simple tips to apply sunscreen effectively for better sun protection.

  • To ensure enough product application, use the two-finger rule for the face and neck.
  • Apply your sunscreen as the last step in your morning skincare routine before heading outdoors.
  • If your skin feels sensitive after shaving, wait a few minutes before applying sunscreen.
  • Reapply every 2 to 3 hours when outdoors, especially after heavy sweating or wiping your face.
  • If you use beard oil, moisturiser, or any other grooming products, let them soak into your skin first, so when you apply sunscreen, it will be evenly distributed.

Conclusion

Daily sun protection becomes much easier when the formula matches your skin rather than working against it. The best sunscreen for men in India is one that suits your skin type, provides broad-spectrum protection and feels comfortable enough to use every day. Build the habit, use it the right way, stay consistent; your skin will benefit from that routine far more than from the wrong formula that doesn’t suit your skin.
