Ordering equipment for a classified area requires additional verification because the documentation is just as important as the product itself. This guide explains how to confirm the applicable hazardous location classification and verify a specific cord reel before issuing a purchase order.

Why “Hazardous Location Rated” Isn’t a Single Spec

A hazardous location rating is specific to a Class, Division, and Group, not a general label. Before issuing a purchase order for an industrial cord reel intended for a classified area, the exact Class I Division 1 requirement should be confirmed from the facility’s area classification study, and the specific product listing, not just the product line, should be verified against that requirement. A reel rated for one classified environment is not automatically suitable for another.

Hazardous location classifications describe the type of hazard present and how likely it is to occur. Class I covers flammable gases or vapors, Class II covers combustible dusts, and Class III covers ignitable fibers or flyings.

Within each class, Division 1 generally indicates the hazard is present under normal operating conditions, while Division 2 indicates it is only present under abnormal conditions. Groups further narrow the classification by the specific substance involved.

Class and Group coverage is stated on the listing, and a single listing can carry more than one. Some reels cover Class I gas groups alongside Class II dust groups and Class III fibers on the same label. Read the coverage off the listing rather than inferring it from the product name. A reel rated for Division 2 is not a substitute for a Division 1 requirement. Matching the reel to the exact classification, rather than the general category of “hazardous location,” is the step most likely to prevent a mismatch after the equipment arrives.

Confirm the Classification Before Shopping for Equipment

The facility’s own documentation should be the starting point, not the vendor’s marketing material.

Before reviewing product specifications, confirm the facility’s hazardous location classification using the appropriate engineering documentation.

  • The area classification study or drawing prepared by the facility’s engineering team identifies the applicable Class, Division, and Group for the specific location
  • A qualified electrical engineer or the facility’s safety officer can confirm the classification if the documentation is unclear or out of date
  • NEC Article 500 and related sections establish the hazardous location classification framework referenced by facility documentation
  • If no classification study exists for the area, one should be completed before equipment is specified; hazardous location equipment should always be selected using documented classifications rather than assumptions

What to Check on the Product Listing Itself

Once the classification is confirmed, the next step is verifying that a specific reel model, not just the general product category, is listed for that exact classification.

  • Check the product’s listing mark, such as UL or CSA, and confirm it applies to the specific Class, Division, and Group required, not a related but different classification
  • Confirm the voltage and amperage rating match the connected load, since a correctly classified reel that is undersized electrically introduces a separate set of problems
  • Verify the enclosure rating, such as NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X, matches the environmental conditions in addition to the hazardous location rating, since these are separate specifications
  • Ask the manufacturer directly for documentation on the specific model number rather than relying on general category language from a catalog page

  • Any connectors, terminations, or accessories used with the reel should also be appropriate for the classified location and the overall installation requirements
  • A copy of the listing documentation for the specific model has been requested and kept on file for the facility’s records

A manufacturer with a genuine Class I Division 1 line will name the covered groups on the listing itself.
