Rolling A Subgrade Twice Costs More Than Renting The Right Roller

Re-rolling a subgrade that failed its density test costs more than renting the roller that would have passed it the first time. That is the whole argument. A five machine grading outfit will push the one compactor it owns onto soil that machine was never built for, because the alternative is a phone call, a delivery fee and an admission that the yard is short a machine. Then the gauge reads low, the lift gets scarified, and a day disappears from a schedule that had no slack in it.

Contractors who price equipment rental dallas tx by the day, against the machine hours they will actually bill, tend to reach the same conclusion. The compactor is the cheapest machine on a grading job to get wrong. It is also the mistake that repeats itself across every site in the rotation, which is why it deserves a real cost per machine hour number instead of a gut feel.

Survey Data Cannot Prove A Lift Is Dense

Drone photogrammetry and GPS grade control answer one question very well. They report where the surface sits against design, so volumes reconcile, cut and fill balance, and the grade signs off clean. Neither one knows anything about what is happening eight inches down, where a nuclear gauge or a proctor curve decides whether the lift holds. Job after job, the same thing turns up on our sites: elevation was right on the first pass and density was not, and no amount of additional survey data ever moved that needle.

Compaction flips meaning depending on which side of the fence you stand on. On the turf side it is the enemy, and an April 2026 publication from UGA Extension recommends annual aeration on compacted sports fields, since pulling plugs is what restores water, nutrient and air movement to the root zone. Anyway, that is the field manager’s fight rather than the grading contractor’s. The number is bigger than the re-roll, and that is the part estimates leave out. Say a crew bills a working day at $2,800 all in for two operators, a dozer, a skid steer and the truck that hauled them out there. A failed test buys back the water truck, a scarify pass, a second round of testing near $350, and a delivery window the concrete sub can no longer use. One failed density test costs more than a full week of roller rental. Across forty sites a year, missing on four of them is somewhere around $13,000 of work nobody billed for, and that math assumes the general contractor stays patient about the slipped date.

Owning A Roller Priced Per Machine Hour

Ownership looks cheap until it gets divided by hours. Suppose a used 54 inch padfoot roller runs $42,000, financed over five years at a payment near $780 a month. Add insurance, a trailer heavy enough to move it legally, annual service, tires and the drum bearings that eventually give out, and the carrying cost sits somewhere close to $13,000 a year before a drop of diesel. Priced that way, equipment rental dallas tx competes against a payment book rather than against a sticker price.

Now divide it out. An outfit that needs heavy cohesive compaction on maybe fifteen of its forty sites, two days each, is putting roughly 240 machine hours a year on that drum, which lands near $54 an hour in fixed cost alone. That figure climbs every week the machine sits. Hauling is the cost nobody puts on the estimate: a lowboy move across the Metroplex eats half a morning, and a roller that sits on the trailer still eats.

Renting Priced Against Forty Sites A Year

Rental prices the same capability by the job instead of by the year. A day on a padfoot roller, plus a plate compactor for the pavers and a rammer for trench backfill, runs a few hundred dollars per machine on the short end, with tax, a damage waiver and a delivery charge covering both ends of the trip. Two days of the correct drum on fifteen sites lands well under that carrying cost. The crew also gets a different machine on the sites that need a different machine, which is the part a pure cost comparison misses, because a rented fleet is matched to the soil and the lift while an owned one is matched to whatever the yard bought four years ago.

The Utilization Number That Decides It

There is a crossover point and it is not mysterious. Take the annual carrying cost of the machine, divide it by the day rate plus delivery, and you get the number of rental days that would have bought the thing outright. On a $13,000 carrying cost against a rental day near $300 delivered, that is roughly 43 days a year on one machine. A five machine grading outfit working forty scattered sites is nowhere near 43 days on a padfoot drum, and it is not close on the rammer either.

Own the machines that run every week, rent the ones that decide whether a lift passes. For most crews working scattered sites the compactor belongs in that second group, because the right drum changes with the soil while the schedule refuses to wait for the wrong one. Track cost per machine hour for a single season and the decision stops being an opinion.
