The next step should remain visible, and users should always understand what changed after they make a selection.

  • Inline controls: Best for small changes that naturally belong on the current screen, such as adjusting quantity or selecting a color. Too many inline controls can make a page feel crowded.
  • Dialogs: Best for short decisions that need immediate attention, such as confirming deletion. They can become frustrating when they block important background information.
  • Temporary panels: Best for related choices, filters, settings, and quick selections. Include a clear close action and a visible way to apply or discard changes.
  • Full-screen flows: Best for detailed, multi-step, or high-risk tasks, such as identity verification or complex reservation creation. Preserve progress and provide a clear path back.

Design for One-Handed Use

Frequently used actions should be positioned where they can be reached comfortably without changing the grip. This does not mean placing every control at the bottom of the screen. Test realistic tasks with people who resemble the intended audience. Ask them to complete a goal, then observe where they hesitate, backtrack, mis-tap, or abandon the flow. Include multiple screen sizes, operating systems, accessibility settings, and network conditions.

Track time to complete the main task, total taps, screen changes, cancellation rates, repeated selections, support requests, and completion rates for people using accessibility features. These signals reveal friction that a visual review often misses.
