Dr. Serkan Aygın: The Surgeon Who Helped Put Istanbul on the Global Hair Transplant Map

June 11, 2026 By GISuser

When people think about hair restoration today, Istanbul comes to mind almost instinctively. That association didn’t happen by accident. It was built over decades by a generation of dedicated specialists, and Dr. Serkan Aygın stands prominently among those who made it happen.

A Medical Foundation Built on Depth

Dr. Aygın completed his foundational medical education at Istanbul University’s Çapa Faculty of Medicine, then pursued dual specializations, one in Clinical Pharmacology at Istanbul University and another in Dermatology at Vakıf Gureba Hospital. This dual-track training gave him something relatively rare in the world of hair transplant in Turkey: a physician who understands both the biological mechanisms of hair loss at a pharmacological level and the skin science that underpins scalp health. That combination would prove enormously useful as the field evolved.

After completing his education, he took up a clinical post at the Outpatient Clinic for Dermatology and Hair Disorders at Vakıf Gureba Hospital, where he worked closely with patients dealing with a condition that, while rarely life-threatening, profoundly affects quality of life and self-image.

Choosing Depth Over Breadth

Many dermatologists spread their practice across the full spectrum of skin conditions. Dr. Aygın made a deliberate and defining choice early in his career: to commit entirely to hair. Rather than maintaining a broad clinical portfolio, he decided to focus on a single field and pursue it with the vision of genuine specialization, closely following every technique and innovation that emerged in hair transplantation over the years.

That kind of focus is easy to underestimate. In medicine, generalism is often rewarded institutionally. Committing to a niche, especially one as technically demanding and rapidly evolving as hair restoration, requires not just clinical skill but real intellectual investment. Dr. Aygın made that investment consistently, and it shows in the depth of expertise his clinic now represents.

Pioneer of an Era

Dr. Serkan Aygın was among the first teams to perform hair transplantation in Turkey, entering the field in 1996 when the procedures available were far more limited in both technique and outcome. Over the following three decades, the field would transform dramatically, from early strip harvesting methods to Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), and then to Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), which is now considered the gold standard for precision and natural appearance.

DHI involves loading extracted grafts into specialized Choi implanter pens and placing them directly into the recipient area without pre-made channels, giving the surgeon precise control over depth, angle, and direction, making it the preferred method at the Dr. Serkan Aygın Clinic. This level of technical refinement translates directly into results that look organic rather than constructed, the hairline equivalent of a tailor-made suit rather than an off-the-rack fit.

Recognition That Reflects a Track Record

In 2019, Dr. Aygın received the European Award in Medicine for Hair Transplant Surgery at a prestigious Paris event organized by the European Awards in Medicine 21st Century, one of the more credible institutional recognitions in the European medical landscape. Such awards rarely reflect a single breakthrough moment. They tend to recognize the accumulated weight of consistent outcomes, patient satisfaction, and professional contribution over time.

His clinic has been built around a reported 98% success rate and offers innovations like unshaven hair transplantation and 3D hair analysis technology, tools that shift the patient experience from guesswork to precision planning. The 3D analysis in particular reflects a broader shift in how the field is approaching pre-operative consultation: less reliance on intuition, more reliance on data.

A Global Conversation, Not Just a Turkish One

What distinguishes Dr. Aygın’s profile from a purely local practitioner is his sustained engagement with the international medical community. He has been invited to more than 50 international conferences to present his findings on hair transplantation techniques, a significant body of outreach that spans decades. His first US appearance came in 2011 at an ISHRS conference in Anchorage, Alaska, where he presented new findings on transplantation, followed shortly after by a session on corrective surgery at the Advanced Hair Symposium in New York.

This kind of peer engagement matters in medicine. It signals that a practitioner’s work can hold up under scrutiny from other specialists, not just from patient testimonials, which, while meaningful, tell a different kind of story.

The Clinic as an Ecosystem

In 2017, Dr. Aygın founded the Doku Clinic brand, expanding beyond hair transplantation into medical aesthetics and cosmetic surgery, while keeping hair restoration as the core identity. The main clinic operates in Şişli, Istanbul, and holds both JCI accreditation and ISO 9001 certification, standards that matter especially for international patients who need assurance that the facility meets global benchmarks, not just local ones.

The clinic has also been an early adopter of exosome treatment and stem cell therapy, still largely experimental but already showing promising results in improving graft survival and overall hair density outcomes. Staying current with emerging regenerative treatments while maintaining proven surgical techniques reflects the kind of balance that separates enduring clinics from those that chase trends.

What Patients Actually Experience

Beyond credentials and accolades, the reputation of any surgical practice ultimately rests on what happens in the room. Across review platforms, a consistent picture emerges: patients describe a clinical environment that combines technical thoroughness with genuine attentiveness, a team-based approach rather than a single-physician bottleneck. The clinic also offers all-in packages covering surgery, hotel accommodation, and transfers, which speaks to a deliberate effort to reduce the friction of medical travel for the large proportion of patients coming from abroad.

A Career Defined by Commitment

Dr. Serkan Aygın’s story isn’t really about a single innovation or a headline procedure. It’s about the compounding effect of sustained focus, three decades of refining the same craft, engaging with the same questions, and building an institution around a clear sense of what excellent hair restoration should look like. In a field that has attracted significant commercial interest and, inevitably, some shortcuts, that kind of commitment has a value that’s hard to manufacture.

For anyone navigating the increasingly crowded landscape of hair transplant options, understanding who has genuinely shaped the field and how is a meaningful starting point. Dr. Serkan Aygın is one of those people.
